Stay overnight in a lighthouse within the UK

Edited by Maria, Maureen D., Lynn, Charmed and 2 others

The romantic idea of staying overnight with in a lighthouse is a possibility within the UK and is a great alternative to only going castle to castle. The Corsewall Lighthouse, near Stranraer on Scotland's west coast, provides fine accommodation and dining. It's light still beams out a warning to the ferries that wend their way across the Firth of Clyde from Scotland to Northern Ireland. The Corsewall has been a working lighthouse since 1815. It is situated on the rugged coast opposite Ailsa Craig -- an uninhabited island of blue granite that was used for the original curling stones. Rooms at the Corsewall are situated in an elegant house at the base of the lighthouse. The Corsewall can be reached by taking a train to Stranraer from Glasgow. The hotel will arrange pickup from the station. Sea-facing rooms start at £105 including five-course dinner and champagne breakfast.

The Old Lighthouse Holiday Complex at St. Ann's Head in Pembrokeshire, West Wales, is one of the few lighthouse hotels that actually offers accommodations in the tower itself. The lighthouse features views over the Irish Sea, a lounge with burning stove, patio and hot tub. You need a car to get to this destination. Just over 100 miles southwest of London's Gatwick airport, the Old Higher Lighthouse is located on Dorset's rugged coast. This stretch of coastline is a natural World Heritage site because of its outstanding geology, spanning 180 million years of earth history. Branscombe Lodge Cottage, just 40 feet from the lighthouse, is available as a vacation rental.
