Split and Remove Scenes of a Video in Windows Movie Maker

Edited by Colette Cole, Crystal, Eng, Rose Najj and 1 other

Welcome to VisiHow. In this tutorial, I'm going to show you how to split and remove scenes in Windows Movie Maker. If you haven't used this program before, I suggest you watch my earlier videos for Movie Maker on VisiHow. Sometimes, we will record things in a video and make a mistake, realize a part wasn't needed, or it will be too long and we need to shorten it. We're going to want to split a scene. We can see here that we have a video that is spliced together. We have three different clips transitioning, but we decided that we don't like it.

Steps

  1. 1
We're going to move the marker (which is a long black line) to the spot where we want to split.
Picture it as a roll of film, and we're cutting it in half. Clips will be highlighted in a blue border when they are selected.

If it wasn't split already, we could split the video again at the end.
It is already split because it was two different clips put together.

We're then going to select it and we can right-click and click "Remove", or we can simply press the "Delete" button on the keyboard.

The part that we didn't want is removed, and the time has reduced.
Now we can split the clip at the end. It spans for quite some time and we'll just say it's too long and we don't want it that long. In this case, we're going to cut it short by recreating where the ending of this particular clip is. We don't want to put any two things together, we just want to make it end.

We're going to place the marker, right-click, and then click on "Set end point".
    We can click on that.

We'll see that any clips after the marker were automatically removed because that's where we wanted the video to finish.
We can do the same thing with the start point.

Let's say everything before the marker is not necessary, so we want to set the start point at that.
We can move the marker by left-clicking and dragging it, then right-click it and click "Set start point".

Once we've made our changes, we're going to want to click on "File" and then "Save project".
We haven't named our product, so we're just going to leave it as "My Movie", but you can name it whatever you wish. Now that is ready to add or edit for the next step in your video.
