We have the layers on the right-hand side
    .
We don't need to select any particular layer because the grid is applies generally to the canvas, to help keep the lines straight and everything in proportion. That doesn't really apply for this particular image that we are working with, but we will see how it's useful. From the above menu, select "View" then "Show" then select "Grid".

The grid has been blasted over the top of the canvas, although when saving or printing the image, the grid won't be visible
    .
This is just to help keep straight lines and details.
