  2. 2
Put some of the coconut fiber in a bucket.
Keep in mind that this material will expand about 17 times its size, so gather just enough to work with the seed starter.

For this demonstration, we will plant some basil.
There are two different kinds. One is called "Genovese", and the other is "Sweet" basil.

They can be lifted up out of the hydroponic tray when needed.
Remove plants that are smaller and weaker, and let the other ones grow. They can be fully submerged into growing beds, rafts, gravel, or expanded clay. A perforated pipe can also be used. There's plenty of advantages to using that.

Place just a little bit of water inside.
Remember to set up a way of filtering the water, so it will be able to move any extra coconut fiber out of the way.

Video: Setup Coconut Coir Hydroponics Net Pots Method 1

Part 2

Jr -lettuce raft system.jpg

If you are planning to grow a lighter crop, such as radishes, spinach, bok choy, endives, lettuce, or an herb such as parsley or cilantro, consider having a hydroponic garden for them. To set up such a garden requires much less space than a traditional garden, and by using coconut coir your plants' roots will be stronger and receive nutrients longer. Coconut coir is a better additive than peat moss and other additives for your plants. Those loose fibers on the outside of a coconut shell, or coir, have a neutral pH, where as peat moss is acidic. Plants grow better in a neutral pH soil. Due to the neutral pH, also, your plants will thrive without plant disease, harmful bacteria, and fungi,

The procedure demonstrated below will show you how to setup coconut coir hydroponics net pots in a hydroponics system called a Deep Water Culture or Raft System. It is excellent for any lightweight crop with a shallow root system. It is simple and inexpensive to build, and is simply a row of plants within pots that are on a Styrofoam raft as it floats them in water full of nutrients. This is an ideal way for you to grow a garden of lightweight veggies or herbs if you are a beginning hydroponics gardener. The entire system will be in three components: reservoir, raft, and aerator. Each of these parts will be described below.

Each of these three parts will be described below:

Jr-lettuce raft hydroponics.jpg
  1. 1
Reservoir " This must be a large, water-tight container with an open top.

    1. The reservoir must be at least one foot in depth.
    2. A thick plastic container with a 15 gallon capacity will suffice, or you can build one of wood with a plastic liner.
    3. A local hydroponics shop or lawn & garden store should have a reservoir for hydroponics net pots, also.
    4. Purchase the nutrients at a lawn & garden center. You will need equipment to measure the pH level regularly, also.
    5. Set the reservoir in a stable and location where the growing plants will not be disturbed.

  2. 2
Raft - A hydroponics raft for the net pots " It should be rigid and lightweight.
Styrofoam is an ideal material for your raft.
    1. Cut the raft so that it will float on the pool of nutrients and water within the reservoir.
    2. You will set the small net pots on top of the raft which will be partially submerged.
    3. The net pots are small plastic pots with spaces on the sides and a hole in the bottom for the roots of the plants. The spacing will allow plenty of air to permeate the plants for efficient growing.
    4. You can find the net pots online. Google "net pots for hydroponics", or you can find them at a gardening store.
    5. Fill the net pots about three-fourths full with coconut coir, and set the plant seedlings just under the surface for growing. This means use seedlings with roots, not seeds. There must be roots upon your planting for your crops to grow in a hydroponics system. Make sure, too, that the roots are contacting the water.

  3. 3
Aerator - The hydroponics aerator ensures that the water and nutrients are provided plenty of air.

    1. You do not want the water to be completely still for hydroponics growing, so it should be operating around the clock.
    2. Consult with the hydroponics or aquarium supply center staff about the right size aerator for your reservoir. Be ready to give the dimensions of your reservoir and how many net pots you will have in it.

  4. 4
Make the right crop choice for your coconut coir hydroponics net pots system.

    1. This setup is ideal for lightweight crops only. Any such crop will grow well in this system that you have built.
    2. Even if you are a beginner whose thumb is not green, you will have success with your crops on the raft. The coconut coir is an excellent medium for your plants.
    3. Lightweight herbal crops, such as basil, parsley, chives and dill will also grow well in your coconut coir net pots.
    4. Crops, such as cabbage, endives, chili peppers will thrive as well. The growing season will be short for your hydroponics grown crops.
    5. This system is also called the "lettuce raft system", and your plants will grow throughout the year in the hydroponics system. There will be very little maintenance required for your special garden, and the cost to set it up will be very reasonable.

  5. 5
Another excellent growing medium for your lightweight crops is called Hydroton.

    1. This product is expanded clay balls that are extremely hot.
    2. They will speed up the growth of your hydroponics raft crops. Like the coconut coir, it has a neutral pH.
    3. The Hydroton will therefore prevent toxins from growing onto your plants, and their growth will be accelerated.
    4. These clay balls are "airy", and will allow much oxygen into the roots of your crop. The Hydroton also is reusable, and drains easily from your net pots.

Questions and Answers

Will coconut coir get out of the net cups from the bottom?

As there are holes on the net cups and the net cups sit in water, the coconut may get out of the net cups from the holes, right?. I have tried: I have used coconut coir to replace soil when I grow things. I think it was caused by: Holes on net cups

Was this helpful? Yes | No | I need help

The holes in the net cups are large enough to let water into the soil, but not large enough to let the expanded and entangled coconut coir get out. There is a low possibility that roots of plants grow large enough to get out of the net cups, but it should be possible to replant these plants into larger net cups.
