How to Turn Your S4 Into a QR and Bar Code Scanner

Bar Codes, DM Codes, QR Codes, and even UPC Codes can be scanned with your S4.

Your Samsung Galaxy S4 has the ability to scan product codes. It doesn't matter what sort of code you want to scan, so long as it meets the general standards for that type of code. For example, you can scan any of the following code types:

  • Bar Codes and UPC codes, also known as Universal Product Codes.
  • DM Codes, also known as Data Matrix Codes.
  • QR Codes, also known as Quick Response Codes.

Now, you might be asking yourself, "Why would I ever care about scanning codes with my phone?"

Well, there are a at least three reasons you might want to do that. Business You might be a business owner, and interested in giving customers a low cost way to scan codes. Some examples of this would be a hardware store, or a restaurant. Crypto Currencies You might use Bitcoin, or another Crypto Currency, in which case you'll want to have quick access to scan and pay, or transfer your funds. Discounts and Freebies Last, you may be interested in getting discounts, saving money, or trying your luck at being the next 'Airplane Code Millionaire', like the man in California who earned more than a million frequent flyer miles from Health Choice UPC codes. Some other companies that will give you discounts include the following, but really, the list is growing every day, and these codes are the 'coupon' of the future:

  • Barnes & Noble; Healthy Choice; Home Depot; Kmart; Nike; Office Max; and Sears.

With your own bar code scanner, you can comparison shop for the best deals, read reviews and testimonials about products, receive coupons, and even get frequent flyer points to use with certain major airlines.

How to Install the AT&T Scanner on your Galaxy S4

If you ever wondered what these codes were, wonder no more.

We've spent a lot of time, and used a whole lot of bar code scanners. Our experience was that, while any of then that can connect to the internet work OK, when it comes to scanning products, the apps we tested were all over the place, from not good, to why did we install this junk on our S4.

With that in mind, the one App everyone liked is from AT&T. It's called the AT&T Code Scanner: QR,UPC & DM, and you can just visit that link to install it directly from the Google Play Store.

Tips and Suggestions on Galaxy S4 Scanners

There are a few things to know about the various scanners you could use.

Not all scanners are equal. In fact, some are manipulative, and outright dishonest. Be very careful when choosing a scanner. We reviewed many of them, and overall were not impressed by most of the 'free' ones. Some things to be aware of:

Was this helpful? Yes | No | I need help

  • Most scanner apps want to access your contact details. This is so that you can share scanned items with friends.
  • Some scanners do not have good camera drivers, and so aren't able to fully use the power of your S4 camera.
  • Many free scanners have advertisements, or intentionally apply annoying restrictions and limitations, like forcing you to scan in landscape mode, as opposed to portrait mode.
  • Customer support for all scanners, outside of paid professional business grade scanners, is essentially nonexistent. Don't waste your time.
  • There is no real difference between paid and free versions. Don't waste your money.

The codes I need to read are small, so focus is a problem?

Any lenses or lighting solutions?. I have tried: I have tried putting a diffuse plastic piece over the light. I can read the codes when they are larger

This is a limitation imposed by the camera of the device. You can try using a simple zooming glass, moving the camera closer to the code (150 mm is usually enough), enlarging the code via photocopying devices, using bright lighting (white light, white background, and black letters are the best combination), and zooming out when scanning. You can also try using alternative scanning products like QR Code Reader or QR Reader.
