How to Remove Super Glue from your Skin

Bobby-Jo Keats superglue1.jpg

Super glue is a popular fast-acting adhesive used for many things, from making crafts, woodworking, or just fixing things around the house. However, many using it have found themselves in some sticky situations when the adhesive gets on their skin. The following steps will show you how to safely and effectively remove super glue from your fingers or hands.

Steps to Remove Super Glue from your Skin

  1. 1
Get a bottle of nail polish remover containing acetone.
Acetone is super glue's worst nightmare. It works to dissolve the adhesive, so the more acetone in the nail polish remover, the better. It doesn't matter what brand you use, as long as it contains acetone. DO NOT rip it off of your skin or pull your glued fingers apart. A little bit of patience will go a long way when removing superglue from your skin.

  2. 2
Use the acetone to loosen the bond.
    Bobby-Jo Keats pouringacetone1.jpg
Slowly pour the acetone over the affected area while gently rolling the super glue off, or use a cloth to apply the acetone while gently wiping the adhesive off as it loosens. if it's a tricky spot to get to, you can dip a cotton swap into the nail polish remover. Keep in mind, however, that acetone will discolor fabrics. If you have a lot of super glue on your skin, try soaking the area in a small bowl of nail polish remover.

  3. 3
Wash the area with warm, soapy water.
    Bobby-Jo Keats handwashing1.jpg
You can add baby oil, coconut oil or olive oil to your soap for better results. You can also add salt, which will work as to exfoliates because of its coarse texture. While washing the area in warm to hot water, carefully roll the skin to let water work on the affected area so it can gradually break the bond. Repeat this step as many times as needed.

  4. 4
File off any residual super glue.
    Bobby-Jo Keats sandpaper1.jpg
If there are still traces of the superglue on your skin, use a nail file or extra fine sandpaper to gently file away the remaining adhesive. The best way to do this is by applying petroleum jelly to the area as you file. This will help protect your skin from damage from filing and the remaining adhesive will begin to roll off of the area.

  5. 5
    Moisturize, moisturize, moisturize.
    Bobby-Jo Keats moisturizer1.jpg
Acetone dries out skin it comes in contact with it, so be sure to use moisturizer after removing the super glue. Continue to use re-hydrating lotion on the area as needed. Your skin's natural oils will gradually remove any traces of the adhesive left on your skin.

Tips Tricks & Warnings

  • Be Careful When Using Corrosive Materials. Take extreme care when using acetone or similar materials.
  • Test a Small Area of the Surface First, Before Using Acetone. Acetone can strip away paint and dissolve certain materials. Always test the acetone on a small sample area before applying it to a larger area.
  • Remove Acetone Completely. After you have removed the super glue with acetone, make sure you wash the surface with some water and a clean cloth. Any leftover acetone will damage any surface when left to soak for too long.

If the superglue has chemically bonded to the floor, you have to use sandpaper to sand it off. But first test to see if this is the case by trying to remove it very carefully with a metal putty knife and hammer. You can buy a putty knife and hammer from the dollar store so you don't have to sell the farm.

Was this helpful? Yes | No | I need help

  1. 1
Hold the putty knife at the edge of the glue spill.
Was this step helpful? Yes | No | I need help

  2. 2
Angle the putty knife close to the floor at a severe angle.
You don't want to be driving the putty knife into the floor further scarring the floor. Instead start with an angle as close as possible to the floor.
Was this step helpful? Yes | No | I need help

  3. 3
Tap the hammer very lightly on the end of the putty knife as if you are chiseling.

  4. 4
If it slips and does not catch on the edge of the glue then you will need to increase the angle of attack - a little more vertical and try again.
Be very gentle because you can easily cause further damage to your floor.

  5. 5
If it works properly and the glue has not chemically bonded to the floor, it will pop off often in one piece.
If that doesn't happen then you will need to move on to sanding it off.

How to remove glue off a floor using sanding method. This only works well on a floor that already has a sanded finish like a hardwood floor. DO NOT use on linoleum.

  1. 1
Start by getting sandpaper and a small block of wood.
You can use a small piece of 2x4 or buy a proper sanding block from your local hardwood store. You will need a course sandpaper like 120 grit and then a finishing sandpaper like 200 or even 400 for a smoother finish. You can also buy sandpaper and sandpaper blocks from many dollar stores if you want to keep your costs down.

  2. 2
To protect the surrounding floor get a piece of hard cardboard and cut a hole in it so the hole is just a little bigger than the glue spill.
The idea here is to protect the surrounding floor from accidental sanding. As you sand the cardboard will wear away and you will need to replace it several times as needed.
Was this step helpful? Yes | No | I need help

  3. 3
Wrap the sandpaper around the wooden block with the rough side facing out.

  4. 4
Using the block of sandpaper start sanding.

  5. 5
Use coarse sand paper at first until the spilled glue is almost level.

  6. 6
When the glue spill is pretty much level with the floor, switch to the fine sandpaper.

  7. 7
Sand until smooth and there is no differentiation between the floor and the glue spill.
