Cutting a callous can be especially dangerous if you're diabetic or have another condition that causes poor circulation, so it's best to see a doctor for treatment in those cases.[1] If you notice any signs of calluses forming, you should take quick action to keep them from getting worse. Calluses are often caused by wearing shoes without socks, walking improperly, or wearing high heels, so it's important to correct those issues right away if you want to get rid of calluses for good. They're most common in people over the age of 65, though you can get them at any age. There are several methods you can use at home to get rid of calluses, such as soaking and filing, but it may take a few days or weeks to completely go away.[2]

How to Get Rid of Calluses With Natural Methods

    Soaking your feet or applying a homemade callus remover will help to soften the callus so that you can file it away with a pumice stone or callus file. There are a few different ways you can do this. Choose a method from the list below, and follow the steps in this article every day until the callus is gone.
    1. Fill a tub or basin with warm water, and add a small amount of liquid soap or body wash. Add a cup of apple cider vinegar to the water, and soak your feet in the water for 15-30 minutes. Rinse and dry your feet after soaking.
    2. Fill a tub or basin with warm water, and add a 1/4 cup of Epsom salts to the water. Soak your feet in the water for 10 minutes before rinsing and drying.
    3. Crush a few uncoated aspirin tablets, and mix them with enough apple cider vinegar to make a paste. Apply the paste to your callus, and cover it with a bandage. Let it sit for 10 minutes, then rinse and dry the area. Do not use this method if you're allergic to aspirin.
    4. Before you go to bed, soak a piece of stale bread in apple cider vinegar place it on the callus. Attach it to your foot with plastic wrap and adhesive tape or a bandage. Do not wrap your foot tightly, as this can reduce circulation. Put a cotton sock over it, and leave the bandage on overnight. Remove the bandage in the morning, and wash and dry your feet.
    5. Use lemon peel to soften the callus overnight. Cut a piece of lemon peel big enough to cover the area, and apply it pith-side down on the callus. Hold it into place with a bandage, and put on a cotton sock. Leave it on while you sleep, and remove it in the morning. Wash and dry your feet.
    6. Apply a medication made specifically for calluses. These often contain salicylic acid, and they can help to soften and remove the dead skin. Follow the instructions on the package. You can purchase one over-the-counter, or get one from your doctor. Do not use any medications containing salicylic acid if you're allergic to aspirin.

    File the callus.

    You can use a callus file or a wet pumice stone. Rub your feet in vigorous, circular motions. You can rinse your feet often while filing. Make sure not to over-do it, or you'll end up with sore feet. You may not be able to remove the callus entirely in one session. When you're done, rinse and dry your feet thoroughly. If you like to go to the beach, another good way to naturally remove your calluses is to walk barefoot on the sand. It will act as a natural file and help to remove dead skin.

    Apply a moisturizer to your clean, dry feet.

    There are many moisturizers out there made specifically for feet, but you can use a regular body lotion, as well. If you don't mind sleeping with socks on, moisturize your feet before bed, and put a pair of cotton socks over top. You'll wake up in the morning with much softer, smoother feet. Repeat the softening, filing, and moisturizing steps daily until your callus is gone.

Tips for Preventing Calluses

  • Make sure your shoes fit properly and that there are no uncomfortable pressure points when you walk. If so, you may want to purchase shoe inserts to make them more comfortable. Stay away from high heels if you tend to get calluses.
  • Always wear socks with your shoes, preferably cotton ones.
  • Keep your feet clean and dry. If your feet tend to sweat, try using a foot powder.
  • Thoroughly scrub your feet every day during your shower or bath. Use an exfoliating body cleanser and a loofah or washcloth to get rid of dead skin.
  • If you continue to suffer from calluses despite taking all of these measures, you may need to see a podiatrist. Calluses can be caused by abnormal foot structure or gait. A podiatrist can evaluate your condition and provide you with special shoe inserts that you may need to compensate for your specific issue.

I have a corn on the side of my right foot that keeps reappearing?

A corn always reappears on the side of my right foot and both my big toes are dry? What do you think I should do? The steps in this article are also helpful for corns. You can soak your feet in warm water with Epsom salts or soap. After rinsing and drying your feet, you can apply a salicylic acid-based corn remover such as an over-the-counter medication or a crushed aspirin tablet mixed with water to make a paste. I had a corn removed from under my heel, now again its paining. I can't put normal pressure on my heel, started to use Aspirin since last 2 days, the pain is lessened.. How many days will it take to remove the corn?

Can I use baking soda to remove calluses?

My feet have a bit of odor too so I am hoping that baking soda can help get rid of the calluses as well as solve the odor problem.. I have tried: I have tried peppermint foot cream for odor and calluses.. I think it was caused by: I am diabetic and my feet get sores easily.

I have 3 very hard callouses that seem to have a hard piece of skin inside it?

I have tried medicated patches....pumice stone...knifing it off.. It becomes so dry so quickly that even moisturizes sucks up in seconds. Painful to wear shoes
