  1. 1
    Open the Gmail application.
    You'll notice that under "Promotions", you'll see ads that look like email messages. If you want to disable this, you have to disable the "Promotions" tab. This will also work so you don't see these particular ads that look like email messages on your desktop as well.

    Tap on the three bars in the top-left corner of the screen.

    Then, scroll down until you reach "Settings".

    Tap on "Inbox categories".

    Uncheck the "Promotions" category.
    All of the items that would normally have gone into "Promotions" will now go straightly to "Inbox".

    Now, tap on the back arrow thrice.
    This will lead you back to you Gmail "Inbox".

    Refresh the email inbox by pulling down the screen.
    Refreshing may take a little longer than normal as Gmail is going to combine all of your items from the "Promotions" tab into your primary mailbox.

    You no longer will see any advertising served at the top.
