Keep car from getting towed

Received Notice that my car will be towed tonight due to expired tags?

I live in Kansas City, Missouri. There are about ten cars in my apartment complex that got a 24 hour notice that their cars may be towed. The complex first put out a notice a few months ago that cars with expired tags may be towed, but this is the first time anyone's received a 24 hour warning. I have a front wheel drive compact car, and always engage the emergency brake before leaving the vehicle, as I typically park on a hill. How seriously should I take this warning? Would I risk being towed if I park on the street outside the complex or at the church next door? My lease expires in 6 weeks.
