Open Ports on a Netgear Router(TCP/UDP)

Edited by Jefrey Matias, Lynn, Melsan, Anonymous and 20 others

Ports (TCP/UDP) are numbered connections the computer uses to sort the kinds of network traffic flowing through your computer. A specific port can support incoming traffic, outgoing traffic, or both. By default, Internet ports and LAN ports are closed so that traffic cannot flow through them. This could be the reason your online game is not connecting to the server. By default, a few specific ports like 21(FTP) and port 80 (http) are open for the computer to use.

  3. 3
Type the username and password (default username is "admin," and default password is "password").
Was this step helpful? Yes | No | I need help

  4. 4
Select Advanced > Advanced Setup > Port Forwarding/Port Triggering to display the following screen

Select the radio button that says "Port Forwarding."

  5. 5
Now click on "Add Custom Service" on the bottom portion of the screen.
Was this step helpful? Yes | No | I need help

  6. 6
Under "Add Custom Service," fill in the details needed.
    2nd.JPG
#*Under "Service Name," you can put the name of the service or application to avoid confusion.
    • Under "Protocol," select "TCP" or "UDP." If you are unsure, just select "TCP/UDP."
    • Under "External Starting and Ending port," if it's not a series, just type the same port number on both fields.
    • Under "Internal IP address," you can enter the IP address that will use the service.
    • Click on "Apply," and after doing so, the service should appear on the "Port Forwarding/Port Triggering" screen.

After you have successfully forwarded the port numbers, make sure you reserve an IP address for the device where forward those port numbers. See below on how to do this:

  1. 1
On the same user interface, go back to the "Advanced" tab.
Was this step helpful? Yes | No | I need help

  2. 2
On the left hand side, click on "Setup."
Was this step helpful? Yes | No | I need help

  3. 3
Under setup, click on "LAN Setup."
Was this step helpful? Yes | No | I need help

  4. 4
Under IP reservation, click the "Add" button and select the device you want those port numbers forwarded to.
Then assign an IP address that is far from other devices. Normally NETGEAR routers would assign an IP address of 192.168.1.2 or 192.168.1.3 on the current devices connected. It would be best to set a static as 192.168.1.115 and so on.

Tidbits

Did you know that NETGEAR routers or modem routers have the capability to change an IP address on their own? That is right, if you have an existing router with an IP address of 192.168.1.1 that has the same IP address as your NETGEAR router, the device will automatically adjust itself to 10.0.0.1 or 172.16.0.1 to avoid conflict for your existing network.

Question:

If I have a wireless router already with the same IP address as NETGEAR has(192.168.1.1), can I change the NETGEAR router's IP that is in line with the IP address of the existing router and have two WiFi networks at the same time?

Was this helpful? Yes | No | I need help

Answer:

Yes you can. You can set the router as an access point instead of cascading on both routers. See below on how to configure cascading routers:

  1. 1
Launch any browser to access the user interface of the router.

  2. 2
Access the router's interface at either routerlogin.com, routerlogin.net or 192.168.1.1

  3. 3
The username (default from the manufacturer) is "admin," and the default password is "password." This can be found on the back or bottom panel of the router.

  4. 4
Once you're logged in, click on "Advanced", and on the left-hand side, click the word "Setup."
Was this step helpful? Yes | No | I need help

  5. 5
On the drop down menu, hit wireless settings and create your second network.
Such as your SSID (wireless network name), Security (any of the following, WEP, WPA, WPA2-PSK [AES] and WPA+WPA2) and create your own wireless password, which must be at least eight characters. If you decide to select WEP, make sure you create a hexadecimal password, with letters from A to F, and numbers from 1 to 9 and a 0 in the key1 box. Now apply the settings.
Was this step helpful? Yes | No | I need help

  6. 6
After you configure your wireless settings, click on "Setup" then "LAN setup."
Was this step helpful? Yes | No | I need help

  7. 7
Under the LAN TCP/IP portion, type in the IP address in line with the existing router's IP address.
Example: If the existing router's IP address is 192.168.1.1, then set the second router's IP as 192.168.1.75, or any of your preferred IP. Subnet mask on 255.255.255.0 and default Gateway address of the existing router.
Was this step helpful? Yes | No | I need help

  8. 8
Connect an Ethernet cord to one of the LAN ports on the existing router and to one of the LAN ports to the second router.
Was this step helpful? Yes | No | I need help

  9. 9
Make sure to power cycle the second router to refresh the system and it should be good to go.

Questions and Answers

I am trying to open a TCP port and UDP port for my Netgear router?

I'm trying to get my Sony PlayStation 3 to work. The customer service representative said I needed to get a UDP and TCP port open.

Your wireless router includes a built-in firewall to prevent any unauthorized services, applications, or devices from using your internet connection. This firewall is very likely blocking your Sony PlayStation 3 from connecting to Sony's video game servers or networks, so the customer service representative you spoke to who told you that you need to open UDP and TCP ports is correct. Sony has many port numbers that you will need to open, and they are listed below. Simply follow the instructions in the great VisiHow how-to article above, to learn how to enter these numbers:

TCP and UDP ports for the PlayStation Network and SCEA (Sony Computer Entertainment America) Game Servers

TCP Ports: 10050, 10051, 10040 - 10060 UDP Ports: 50000 - 60000

These numbers will allow your Sony PlayStation 3 to connect to the PlayStation Network and most of the online video games that use their game servers through SCEA game servers. If the online video game you want to play doesn't use their servers through SCEA game servers, you will need to look up that game's TCP and UDP ports so you can connect to their servers. Other PlayStation 3 services use other TCP and UDP ports, as well; you can look at Sony's official list by clicking this link.

Port forwarding Netgear Genie DGN1000v3?

I have a Netgear Genie router providing ADSL, this is connected via Ethernet to a Huawei LTE router, which further is connected to an AP on the other side of the house, which connects to the DVR via a WiFi repeater. Setting up port forwarding on the Huawei and connecting to the DVR via this routers IP works perfectly, but when attempting to set up the same port forwarding rule on the Netgear (so that our server connecting to the internet via Netgear ADSL can run the DynDNS update), it does not allow the connections, using port 80, but have tried other ports (e.g. 2345) in case ISP block, but still no luck. Any suggestions?

Nat Type 3 setting on PS4 Wired connection?

Hello, I used to use a wireless connection for my PlayStation 4 using a Netgear router. I connected the Ethernet cable to the router and PlayStation just now, and the connection has switched to a Nat Type 3, which has some restrictions. I'd like for it to be a Nat Type 2 for gaming purposes. Is there a way to switch it back?

Direct connect for video games but using WiFi Repeater?

My buddy is at his house. I am at mine. We both are on our houses' respective wireless networks, only I'm connected to my WiFi through a repeater. We want to play a video game & direct connect to each other rather than using an online server. I know how we could connect if we were just both on our WiFi, we would get the IP addresses I think. But I have no idea on how to connect if I'm on a repeater since I wouldn't have 2 IP addresses?
