Open Ports on a Netgear Router(TCP/UDP)

Edited by Jefrey Matias, Lynn, Melsan, Alma and 22 others

Ports (TCP/UDP) are numbered connections the computer uses to sort the kinds of network traffic flowing through your computer. A specific port can support incoming traffic, outgoing traffic, or both. By default, Internet ports and LAN ports are closed so that traffic cannot flow through them. This could be the reason your online game is not connecting to the server. By default, a few specific ports like 21(FTP) and port 80 (http) are open for the computer to use.

Under "Add Custom Service," fill in the details needed
    .
    2nd.JPG
#*Under "Service Name," you can put the name of the service or application to avoid confusion.
    • Under "Protocol," select "TCP" or "UDP." If you are unsure, just select "TCP/UDP."
    • Under "External Starting and Ending port," if it's not a series, just type the same port number on both fields.
    • Under "Internal IP address," you can enter the IP address that will use the service.
    • Click on "Apply," and after doing so, the service should appear on the "Port Forwarding/Port Triggering" screen.

After you have successfully forwarded the port numbers, make sure you reserve an IP address for the device where forward those port numbers. See below on how to do this:

  1. 1
On the same user interface, go back to the "Advanced" tab.

  2. 2
On the left hand side, click on "Setup."
Was this step helpful? Yes | No| I need help
  3. 3
Under setup, click on "LAN Setup."
Was this step helpful? Yes | No| I need help
  4. 4
Under IP reservation, click the "Add" button and select the device you want those port numbers forwarded to
    .
Then assign an IP address that is far from other devices. Normally NETGEAR routers would assign an IP address of 192.168.1.2 or 192.168.1.3 on the current devices connected. It would be best to set a static as 192.168.1.115 and so on.

Tidbits

Did you know that NETGEAR routers or modem routers have the capability to change an IP address on their own? That is right, if you have an existing router with an IP address of 192.168.1.1 that has the same IP address as your NETGEAR router, the device will automatically adjust itself to 10.0.0.1 or 172.16.0.1 to avoid conflict for your existing network.

Question:

If I have a wireless router already with the same IP address as NETGEAR has (192.168.1.1), can I change the NETGEAR router's IP that is in line with the IP address of the existing router and have two WiFi networks at the same time?

Was this helpful? Yes | No| I need help

Answer:

Yes, you can. You can set the router as an access point instead of cascade on both routers. See below on how to configure cascading routers:

  1. 1
Launch any browser to access the user interface of the router.

I am trying to open a TCP port and UDP port for my Netgear router?

I'm trying to get my Sony PlayStation 3 to work. The customer service representative said I needed to get a UDP and TCP port open.

Your wireless router includes a built-in firewall to prevent any unauthorized services, applications, or devices from using your internet connection. This firewall is very likely blocking your Sony PlayStation 3 from connecting to Sony's video game servers or networks, so the customer service representative you spoke to who told you that you need to open UDP and TCP ports is correct. Sony has many port numbers that you will need to open, and they are listed below. Simply follow the instructions in the great VisiHow how-to article above, to learn how to enter these numbers:

TCP and UDP ports for the PlayStation Network and SCEA (Sony Computer Entertainment America) Game Servers

TCP Ports: 10050, 10051, 10040 - 10060 UDP Ports: 50000 - 60000

These numbers will allow your Sony PlayStation 3 to connect to the PlayStation Network and most of the online video games that use their game servers through SCEA game servers. If the online video game you want to play doesn't use their servers through SCEA game servers, you will need to look up that game's TCP and UDP ports so you can connect to their servers. Other PlayStation 3 services use other TCP and UDP ports, as well; you can look at Sony's official list by clicking this link.

Nat Type 3 setting on PS4 Wired connection?

Hello, I used to use a wireless connection for my PlayStation 4 using a Netgear router. I connected the Ethernet cable to the router and PlayStation just now, and the connection has switched to a Nat Type 3, which has some restrictions. I'd like for it to be a Nat Type 2 for gaming purposes. Is there a way to switch it back?

Port forwarding Netgear D7800 is not working. I've set them up before with other routers without issue?

I have webcams on my LAN that I wish to monitor remotely. My Internet connection has a static IP address. I've set up port forwarding from the external ports to the internal IP addresses. The devices have manual (static) internal IP addresses. I've reserved the IP addresses. I've rebooted the router. (I've updated the firmware, and rebooted). The webcams are working on the internal IP addresses. The webcams cannot be accessed via [staticIP]:[externalPort]. What am I missing? I don't think my situation is different to that outlined in the article. But having confirmed I have configured as suggested, I don't have a solution. Port forwarding still doesn't work. I have tried: Checked the webcams work Checked the webcams are on the IP addresses the router lists Added the port forwarding entries from the external to the internal ports Reserved the internal IP addresses (Using identical names to above) Updated the router firmware rebooted the router (several times) Sworn (a lot). I think it was caused by: The router. It is the only changed item from previously working setups. This worked fine with previous routers, including BT and Draytek. I'm reasonably familiar with port forwarding and have never experienced a total failure like this previously.

It took me a while to get port forwarding working, and I learned the following;

All the router needs to activate the port forward, including opening the pinhole in the firewall, is add a custom service in that section of the advanced settings as described above.

But, it is picky about what settings it will work with, so here are the rules I found worked;

Ensure target devices have manually set (static) local IP addresses and use low ones. Obviously reserving a range for these on the router will be advantageous) I have all mine under 20.

Use high numbers for the ports. I have all mine over 2000

Use the same port number internally and externally

It may be that not all three rules are critical, but at least one of them is, and once I had it working I was too tired to test further. Yes, it's a pain re-configuring the IP settings of local devices, but it beats tearing your hair out.

Direct connect for video games, but using WiFi Repeater?

My buddy is at his house. I am at mine. We both are on our houses' respective wireless networks, only I'm connected to my WiFi through a repeater. We want to play a video game & direct connect to each other rather than using an online server. I know how we could connect if we were just both on our WiFi, we would get the IP addresses I think. But I have no idea on how to connect if I'm on a repeater since I wouldn't have 2 IP addresses?

I'm trying to connect a WD MyCloud storage to the internet?

I have a Netgear router. I've connected the MYCloud storage and it can be seen on the network by multiple computers, but the internet connection is not working. I have tried: Rebooting MYCloud drive, assigning a static address and enabling port forwarding. I was able to get port 443 open, but 80 remained closed. Tried configuring Norton for the device to allow ports to be used. I think it was caused by: No idea

Do I need to set up port triggering as well?

I'm able to port forward with other routers, but this one seems to give me some trouble. When I don't do any port triggering and I just do the normal port forwarding set up, it doesn't work. So I tried with port triggering and I still failed on opening the port. My router is R6100
