How to conduct a phone unlock for investigative purposes?

I am researching the ability to access mobile devices without password/pattern locks for forensic investigation purposes. Obviously the primary issue is to retrieve data so a hard reset is not the first option. I have tried: Hard reset is the last option. Software methods will not access unless phone is available and linked.. I think it was caused by: NA

If it is just to mainly retrieve data, there are spy apps like Auto Forward and others that can be installed using just the person's phone number. There are other spy apps that bypass and locks and with Lollipop and Marshmallow Android OS on newer devices, a hard reset will still not get you access to the phone. You would have to disable the USB debugging and then install new firmware on the device.
