How do I transfer files (photos and music) from my Samsung S4 to my windows PC?

I don't see to have a driver either on my phone or PC to make the connection and transfer files. I have downloaded the Samsung Smart Switch program on my PC. I tried using this program and connect the phone to the PC using the original Samsung USB charger cord. Smart Switch stays stuck on the start screen asking me to connect my phone to the PC. The cord seems to work as I'm getting a charge but no connection between PC and phone. . I have tried to find where to change the USB settings on my phone but I'm not able to locate that setting. I would like to save files to my PC to make room on my phone. If you have any advice, please let me know.. Thank you. I tried the walkthrough in the article but still am not making the connection. I'm not very computer savvy anymore. I grew up on the Commodore. Thanks
