Cupuacu is a tropical super fruit that is native to South America and that is used for weight loss. It is about the size of a large grapefruit with brown leathery skin. Inside it has laterally segmented, fibrous white to yellow colored fruit inside with small brown beans lining the center. The fruit tastes mostly like a pear with a hint of chocolate, pineapple and banana flavors. The edible part of the cupuacu is often called "the butter" because it is very soft and mushy in texture but it is the seeds of the fruit that are used to make cupuacu butter, which is melted mixed with sugar and tastes quite a bit like chocolate.

  • Note that almost all Cupuacu is organic and picked wild as it not mass farmed as much as acai, cacao and other superfruits from the Amazon
  • The amount of pulp you might be able to get out of a cupuacu fruit can greatly vary from fruit to fruit so some time you might have to use more than one fruit to get the amount needed in a recipe
  • Store the cupuacu fruit in a dark cool place until you are ready to use it and avoid putting it in the refrigerator, which encourages its internal structure to break down
  • In some areas you may not be able to buy cupuacu fruit in any other form but frozen, in which case one cup of frozen cupuacu pulp is equal to the pulp of one fresh fruit
  • To extract the cupuacu pulp from the fruit, cut the fruit in half with a large sharp knife and then scoop the flesh from the large segmented areas inside (they resemble large grapefruit segments)
  • The seeds of the fruit are beans made into a tasty butter that is mixed with sugar, the same way cacao beans are melted down to make chocolate
  • Nut milks, coconut milk and rice milk are all interchangable in the cupuacu weight loss smoothie recipes above with a minimum of change in calories
