Important Parts of a Motorcycle

Knowing the parts of a motorcycle is important. The motorcycle safety foundation has established a checklist called; T-CLOCS. It's important to know and check these parts before you ride a motorcycle.

Was this helpful? Yes | No | I need help

  • T - Tires. Check the wheels every time you ride.
  • C - Controls (levers and pedal, cables, hoses, throttle).
  • L - Lights. Ensure you have good Light (battery, headlights, turn signals, mirrors, etc.).
  • O - Oil. Check the Oil and all the fluid levels.
  • C " Chassis. (frame, suspension, chain, etc.)
  • S " Stands. (center stand and/or kickstand)

Know The Basics Of How The Motorcycle Runs

A semi-automatic motorcycle contains a gasoline engine, which allows the reciprocating motion of pistons to be converted into rotary motion. This motion will then be transmitted to the back wheel. The motorcycle will the lean forward as you turn the throttle. The throttle controls the amount of gas that is fed to the engine, proportional to the amount of speed the motorcycle can gain. While the motorcycle runs, you can steer the handlebars to go in the desired directions. The right hand lever is the front brake. The right foot pedal is the rear brake. And the left pedal allows the driver to change gears.

The Steps In Running The Motorcycle

As a beginner, you can practice driving by setting the motorcycle in a center stand position. After you become familiarized with the steps, you can proceed to the actual running of the motorcycle in the practice field.

  1. 1
Turn the ignition key ON by inserting the ignition key and turning it in a clockwise direction.
After this, you should be able to see the motorcycle panel turn on.

  2. 2
Set the gear position in neutral.
Before starting the motorcycle engine, check to see if the motorcycle gear indicator on the panel is in the neutral position, or if zero indicator shows. If the gear indicator is not in the neutral position, adjust it by using the left pedal. Stepping on the rear part of the left pedal will shift the gear down, while stepping on the front part of the left pedal will shift the gear up. Shift the gear down until the gear is in the neutral position, or zero indicator shows. In neutral, the motorcycle can actually be pushed or pulled and will move freely.

  3. 3
    Starting the motorcycle engine.
Using the electrical starter, you can start the engine. The electrical starter is located near the throttle, or the right part of the handlebars. Press it for two to three seconds and this will enable the engine to start. You can start the engine by using the kick-starter. The kick-starter is located near the right foot pedal. Kick or push the kick-starter in a downward direction and this will start the engine.

  4. 4
After the motorcycle engine starts, you can now change gears from neutral to the primary gear.
This is done by stepping on the front part of the left pedal, while the throttle is closed (idling as low as possible). The gear indicator on the panel will then change from zero or neutral, to first or primary gear.

  5. 5
Rotate the throttle to start the motorcycle moving.
Slowly open the throttle located on the right part of the handlebar. Turn it slowly, especially if you are still learning how to ride. As you turn the throttle slowly, the motorcycle's wheel will slowly start to turn forward. Do not fully turn the throttle as a beginner. As the motorcycle moves forward, slowly lift your feet off the ground and control your balance.

  6. 6
Turning using the handlebar will allow you to move in the desired direction.
As a beginner, you can slow down the motorcycle while doing the turns. You can also use your feet to support your turns. As you make a turn, switch the signal light to indicate your desired direction. The signal light is located on the left part of the handlebars.

  7. 7
Different gears of the motorcycle have different characteristics.
The neutral gear allows you to manually move your motorcycle wheel freely, while the higher gears (first, second, third, fourth, etc.) allow you to move your motorcycle's wheel as you turn the throttle, these gears have a maximum speed it can attain as you turn the throttle. To shift the gear up, close the throttle and step on the front part of the left pedal. With respect to the gear you use, the throttle will control the speed of the wheel the engine will produce.
Was this step helpful? Yes | No | I need help

  8. 8
To stop or slow the motorcycle while in motion, slowly close the throttle.
Adjust the gear position with respect to the speed. To shift the gear down, close the throttle and step on the rear part of the left pedal. Slowly put your feet on the ground.
Was this step helpful? Yes | No | I need help

  9. 9
Turn the ignition key in a counter clockwise direction to turn the motorcycle engine off.
    The engine will then stop.

How To Avoid Road Accidents?

Accidents are results of unsafe scenarios and unsafe acts. In order to avoid accidents, you need to be cautious and careful. Check out our tips below in order to travel more safely with your motorcycle and avoid road accidents. Make sure that you are always forewarned:

Was this helpful? Yes | No | I need help

  1. 1
    Focus.
Do not think of other things. Put everything aside and focus on driving. If you have a problem with your job, at home, or with that special someone, stop thinking about it for a while and focus on driving your motorcycle. You do not want to add more problems, or worse, you do not want to create problems for other people. Be alert to your surroundings, the weather and other vehicles. Keep in mind that you need to keep your balance at all times, and that a single mistake can put you in danger. Keen concentration will ensure you will get to your destination, safe and sound.
Was this step helpful? Yes | No | I need help

  2. 2
    Observe Proper Maintenance.
Make sure that you regularly have your motorcycle serviced for preventive maintenance. This will make sure that your chances of a breakdown during your travels are reduced. Aside from the benefits that go with it, like better performance, a longer motorcycle life and a more efficient engine, you will be assured you are riding on a safe and well-maintained vehicle. If you are able to perform the maintenance yourself, then you may do so. If you cannot, then you need to find a qualified mechanic or shop to do it for you. Preventive maintenance services for a motorcycle cost much less then avoiding maintenance until something major goes wrong.
Was this step helpful? Yes | No | I need help

  3. 3
    Relay Signals.
Make sure that you relay signals to other motorists. Whenever you make a turn, change lanes, or come to a complete stop, make sure other vehicles, especially those following you, are warned of your next move. Do not try to make sudden or quick changes in speed or direction. Do everything gradually. Remember, you are on two wheels and any bump into your vehicle can cause great damage to you and your vehicle.
Was this step helpful? Yes | No | I need help

  4. 4
    Eyes on the Road.
You are driving, not sightseeing, so keep your eyes off of those billboards and ads. Also, make sure that you keep an eye on unsafe motorists, and try to keep your distance from them. If you can, avoid them at all cost. You do not want to travel side by side with a moving guillotine. Also, be sure that you watch out for road bumps, potholes, wet and icy roads, and oil spills. These are road hazards and should be avoided. If you cannot avoid them, see to it that you are moving slowly enough that you can stop quickly and safely anytime you need to.
Was this step helpful? Yes | No | I need help

  5. 5
    Wear Visible Clothing.
If possible, especially when you are travelling at night, wear a visibility vest. Wearing high visibility clothing will allow other motorists to see you properly. Make sure your lights are functioning, so you can be easily seen. In the fog, make sure you travel on the side of the road at a slower speed. Some cyclists wear headgear that blinks; if you can get one, it's a good idea as an extra preventative.
Was this step helpful? Yes | No | I need help

  6. 6
    Always Overtake on the Left.
Do not overtake other vehicles on the right, or you may get sandwiched between a vehicle and a wall, or get thrown off into the gutter. Make sure when you overtake a vehicle, everything is clear. Do not put yourself in any unsafe situations. If you are overtaking a truck or a longer vehicle, make sure you properly estimate the speed and distance so you don't get caught by other vehicles in their lanes. Never try to pass on curves, as you or the vehicle on the other end will have limited vision due to that curve.
Was this step helpful? Yes | No | I need help

  7. 7
    Ride Safely.
Do not do tricks while on your motorcycle. Always stay safe. Do not race with other motorists; the danger will never be worth the momentary thrill you get from taking the lead. Observe road signs and traffic rules. The more you ride safely, the lower your chances are of getting into accidents.
Was this step helpful? Yes | No | I need help

  8. 8
    Never Stay Too Close.
Always maintain your distance from the vehicle in front of you. Do not stay too close, as the vehicle may suddenly stop at any time and you may not have enough time to react and stop. The safe distance is to stay twice the length of your vehicle behind the vehicle ahead of you. If you are following a speeding truck, make sure that the distance between you and that truck is enough for you to hit the brakes and make a safe stop.

  2. Don't Drink and Ride. This is basic. Anyone knows this. Driving under the influence of alcohol is illegal in most countries. If you have had a few beers, make sure you leave enough time before driving your motorcycle again.

You need to learn to be a defensive driver. You should always keep your eyes open and be aware of the other drivers. Many people assume that other drivers will just stay out of the way, or pay attention. This is not always the case and you should make sure you are the one paying attention. Give yourself plenty of space in between you and other drivers, for plenty of stopping time. Also make sure you aren't tired when driving. Drivers falling asleep at the wheel, cause more accidents than drunk drivers.

How to save gas with semi automatic motorcycle?

Semi automatic motorcycles, in fact all motorcycles, are gas savers compared to cars. When you buy your first motorcycle in its original form is what is called, "stock" and "standard". These are the original parts of that certain motorcycle that the company guarantees will save gas, and gives you the exact fuel amount it will consume per kilometer, so to save gas you need your semi automatic motorcycle to be in good condition and from sprocket to engine. You can also save gas by riding your motorcycle between 40 and 60 km/hr. The faster it runs the faster it consumes gas.

Automatic

Motorcycles that need no shifting of gears are "Automatic". The gear shifting relies on the driving process. As it is driven, the speed and positioning of the automatic gears depend on the engine's revolution or the RPM. Scooters are one kind of motorcycles with this gearing method.

Manual

A manual motorcycle makes use of a sequential gearbox, and there are several methods for the shifting gears by using the left foot lever and the clutch lever to release it before shifting its gears. Mostly, big bikes have a manual transmission.

What is the proper gear shifting pattern on a semi- automatic motorcycle?

To properly shift gears on a semi automatic motorcycle. Lets say you are currently in 1st gear, in order to shift gears; most riders do a rev by slowly turning the throttle back and forth. The proper way is by releasing the throttle to avoid the engine making too many sounds. After releasing the throttle, step on the front lever to go the next gear. While stepping on the lever, turn the throttle slightly, but just a little. When you release the lever, the gear will adjust itself and stop a bit after shifting. Now quickly release the lever and followed by slowly turning your throttle. If you get the timing just right, you can shift properly and you will notice while you're shifting, the engine is smoothly running.

Was this helpful? Yes | No | I need help

There isn't really a pattern to shift with a semi-automatic bike. If you have a tachometer, when your RPMs are around 3-4K, you can just hold in the clutch and the semi automatic bike shifts itself. When you drive enough, even without a tachometer, you should be able to tell by the sound of your bike it's time to shift gears. It will sound as if it's getting revved up a bit too much. As you increase speed, you will hear the engine pushing harder, and that's when you should shift gears. Then you should hear a drop in the sound intensity, as you start accelerating in a new gear.

Questions and Answers

What about higher gears?

What's the purpose of first, second, third and fourth gears?

If you are asking that instead of lower to higher gears, you reverse them from highest gear to lowest gear…Yes, you could do that, but only if you are trying to stop. The style of shifting from higher to lower gears is called; Engine Breaking. This kind of shifting can damage your gears, so it is not advisable unless you really to, like if your breaks aren't working, but do it slowly.

Was this helpful? Yes | No | I need help

The purpose of shifting to higher gears is to accelerate even faster. Every time you shift to a higher gear, the speed of the motorcycle will increase. The higher the gear, the faster the motorcycle is able to go.

Lower gears allow you to take off or drive at lower speeds. These gears work as a start off for you to get to the higher gears/speed during your drive. The lower gears are set up to handle lower speeds on your bike - for driving through town or in slower speed limits.

Semi automatic method of starting the engine?

There are only two possible ways to start the engine of a semi-automatic motorcycle. They are:

  • Electric Starter - your motorcycle will start using an electronic switch, powered by your battery.
  • Kick-Starter - you can use this if you have issues with your battery, and can no longer establish the electronic starter. This method requires you to kick a certain lever to start the engine manually.

Clutch-less Semi-Automatic 4 Speed?

Hello, I just got a clutch-less 4 speed. Looks like it's counter clockwise 0-1-2-3-4-0. I have never driven one of these before, and took it out for spin. It was a struggle to tell the difference between gears, and I was unable to shift into neutral unless, I stopped it and turned it off.

Intelligence Gear Transmission?

Hello, actually I am doing a project on semi-automatic transmission, which have not yet been adopted by any of the bike brands available in India. So if a company like Bajaj introduces IGT for one of their models, would it let them gain a competitive advantage over the rivals? For example- if they are selling their 150 cc bike at the price Rs.80,000 in India which is quite reasonable, and if they come out with a 150 CC along with an IGT, what do you think the price should be?
