Is there any way to save a computer that appears with a black screen and no cursor?

The computer of a friend of mine seems to be infected with a virus whereby it has gone into a black screen mode and everything is frozen... it doesn't even have a cursor and she feels she has lost everything... is there any possible way to get her back to some sort of functioning state?. I have tried: I'm not sure other friends are trying to help her and I'm unaware of what they have attempted. I think it was caused by: She downloaded something accidentally
