Increase a PHP Memory Limit for DreamHost
Edited by Djinu, VisiHow, Eng
Hi! In another video, we covered how to install a WordPress theme. In this video, we're going to cover how to increase the memory limit when using DreamHost shared hosting.
Steps
1
One important part to note is that you want to make sure the format is set to plain text in "Format". If you're using a rich text format, you will not be able to save the file as a format without an extension.
2
In the "TextEdit" menu along the top of the screen, click "Format"
.
3
Then, click "Make Plain Text" (if available) in the menu
.
4
Type "memory_limit = 128M" in the text document
.
5
To save the file, click "File" in the menu at the top
.
6
7
Save the file to the desktop as "phprc" by typing it
.
8
Uncheck the box "If no extension is provided, use '.txt' "
.
This file needs to be without an extension.
9
Click the blue "Save" button in the lower-right corner of this window
.
10
Now, go to the Finder window and locate the file you've just saved on the desktop
.
11
Also, go to your web site folder
.
For this tutorial, the web site folder is "xonlo.com". In your web site folder, add two new folders.
12
Right-click the folder directory and select "New Folder"
.
13
14
15
Right-click the folder directory and select "New Folder"
.
Alternatively, click it in the menu at the top.
16
Name the second folder the version of PHP you're using
.
In this case, it is version 5.4. Therefore, type "5.4".
17
Rename the ".php" folder to "php"
.
18
Drag the "5.4" folder into the "php" folder
.
Wait with name the "php" folder as ".php" until we've finished editing all of the information.
19
Click the folder tab with the "phprc" file in Finder
.
20
Click and drag "phprc" to the web site folder
.
It is "xonlo.com" in this video.
21
Drag the "phprc" file into the "5.4" folder
.
22
Release the mouse button to move the file
.
23
Click the left arrow to go back
.
24
Rename "php" back to ".php"
.
25
26
Now, open Adobe Dreamweaver CC 2015
.
27
Click the "Remote server" drop-down menu
.
28
This is the local view of the account. There is the ".php" folder.
29
30
Click 'Put file(s) to "Remote Server (xonlo.com)" '
.
The folder will be uploaded to the server.
31
Now, switch to the web site
.
32
Click "reactivate your previous theme"
.
33
Type the name for the theme to search for it
.
Now, try reactivating the theme that you wanted and see whether the error still shows up or not.
34
This time, the theme activates without the error because you have increased the PHP memory limit.
