Black screen of death (Windows 7 Home) when I try to boot the notebook?

After inputting the log-on password, I get a very brief (1 sec) message (black text on white background) saying "Please wait". Then the screen goes black with just an operational cursor. Task manager still works, to a point. If I end Windows Explorer process, then attempt to reinstall, the system hangs.. . When viewing the processes screen, it displays just 5 processes. The status bar tells me there are 23 processes running, but when I click on 'Show processes for all users', task manager just freezes.
