If the owner left any information about Google accounts or PIN code numbers, you will be able to unlock their phone. If you know their Google account information, you will also be able to unlock their phone by entering the wrong PIN code 20 times until the phone asks you for the Google account information. When you enter it, you will be able to change the PIN code to something you remember so you can get the information that's inside the phone.

Unfortunately, if you don't know any of this person's Google account information, you will need to perform a Factory Reset on the device so you can get into it. As you already know, a Factory Reset will wipe the phone -- in other words, it will delete all of the data. However, it's the only option you have to unlock the phone if you don't know their Google account information or their PIN code number. To learn how to perform a proper Factory Reset, read through the steps in this VisiHow article.

Is there anyway that doesn't require buying an app or hard resetting my phone to unlock a pin?

I put a pin on my phone really quick, but I assumed it was my regular pin. It wasn't and I can't get my phone to unlock. It's not letting me choose the option to go into my Gmail account.
