Without knowing the error code that corresponds to your problem, it's difficult to say with certainty what they best approach would be to fix this issue.

If you're getting an error code in the 3000s, you may have an issue with your firewall. Attempt to disable that and and see if you're now able to update.

If that doesn't work, you might need to fiddle with your hosts file.

Try this process and see if it fixes anything. Note that if you're not comfortable playing with the hosts file, you should seek assistance.

If you've tried the 'regular' way to restore your iPhone through iTunes and it's not working or you're getting error messages you may be able to restore following the below steps.

  1. 1
    Download the .ipsw.
You may want to download the specific restore .ipsw from a site like iClarified. You need to match the firmware version and the service types to your phone. If you have a GSM iPhone (has a SIM card slot) then you need a GSM version of your firmware. Save it to the desktop so you can find it easily.
    • Make sure Apple is still actively signing the firmware you are wanting to restore to.

  2. 2
    Backup and restore.
Then after connecting your iPhone and starting the iTunes application proceed to back up your device. If you already have a back up then you may proceed to the restore screen. Hold down the shift key on Windows, option key on a Mac, and click on the restore button. You will then need to select the .ipsw file from the area where it was saved.

  3. 3
    Verify.
iTunes will ask if you are certain you want to restore. Click restore. You may also be shown a 'changelog' or asked to agree to terms. Click 'next' and 'agree' respectively.
Was this step helpful? Yes | No | I need help

  4. 4
    Wait.
The process of restoring will begin. Sometimes, it may even seem that the process has stopped, stalled, or has froze but it is a lengthy process so be sure to give it enough time. At certain points you may feel that the process isn't working, as there may be no movement in the process meter in iTunes, but wait it out and it most likely will begin to move again.
Was this step helpful? Yes | No | I need help

  5. 5
    Set-up.
When the entire restore process is complete your phone will reboot and once it re-connects with iTunes you may have messages you need to 'OK' or even updates. After this you may be prompted to set-up your phone again. You can set it up as a 'new' iPhone or backup from an existing backup file.
