I am selling my Samsung Galaxy S4 and want to wipe it clean. How do I do that?
Performing a Factory Reset wipes your data and makes it very, very difficult for the next owner to look through any of your personal data and use it against you. However, there is a small chance that the data on your device can be recovered after performing a Factory Reset; this is because the data is simply overwritten once, and not encrypted or given multiple passes to make it nearly impossible for anyone to retrieve it. However, there is a way that you can encrypt your phone's data before you perform a Factory Reset that will make it impossible for the person who buys your phone to get to any of your data. Follow these simple steps to encrypt your device and wipe it for the next owner:
- Charge your phone to 100% and keep it plugged in during this process.
- Open your phone's Settings application.
- Open the Security panel.
- Tap Encrypt phone.
Follow the onscreen instructions to get the process started. This may take an hour or two, depending on how much information is on your phone. Once your Samsung Galaxy S4 is encrypted, you can perform a Factory Reset by reading the VisiHow guide below, or following the steps in this separate VisiHow guide.
You have successfully encrypted your phone and performed a Factory Reset so that the next owner of your Samsung Galaxy S4 will not be able to retrieve, look at, or use any of your personal information.
