How to make sure USB is safe to use?

Hi, we have a small problem. One of my colleagues somehow got a virus on his machine. We think it is some sort of .pdf file that caused all files on his PC to get encrypted. The decision has been made to do a fresh install on his machine. But we noticed that he was trying to save something on his USB drive. I have deleted files from it, but still not 100% sure that it is safe to use. Is there anything else I should check/scan apart from following the steps described on VisiHow on how to display hidden files. Also, should I be doing this on my machine? Many thanks
