How to heal my gravelly, strained voice?

I had a bad flu about six weeks ago, after a week or so, it healed, but I started to lose my voice. It is gravelly and strained, going high and low, sometimes it's OK, but in general it's strained and hoarse. I am also a performance poet and one evening just after recovering from the flu I read and ranted quite intensely.. I have tried: Nothing. I think it was caused by: Flu? Smoking over the summer?
