Screen is blinking, Everything seems to be running, but you can't see anything on the screen, not even a flashing cursor. The black screen in Windows occurred while I am using it, and it only turns black that I can't see the content and the computer is running?

It occurs often, blinks to a black screen and turn normal in a second or minute periodically (that the normality goes off at the same rate) but also it cannot turn normal for a while.

I play world of warcraft, there was an update so I left my PC to run the update overnight. I woke up the next morning an saw my screen was black but the keyboard an machine etc were still running so I assumed the PC had "gone to sleep" I moved the mouse pressed keys etc but nothing. I then restarted the PC but my screen stayed black almost like it was still in stand bye mode when its off. I've disconnected all power and tried again but still no result. The machine boots up but the screen stays like it would if it was off. Once or twice I've seen the screen boot for a second but then goes black any advice? I have the nvidia gtx 295 so a fairly old card but running it via HDMI with an LG 2ms response screen?
