Backing up new phone contacts to Google as default action?

Every time I add a new contact to my Galaxy S4 I have to manually choose to save it to my Google contacts rather than my device. I remember this being a default option on my S2 but can't find it on the new phone. Going to my accounts and syncing to Google does not update the new contacts that were inadvertently saved to device nor set the default. Any help?
