How do I mute my microphone while on a phone call on the Samsung Galaxy S4?

I need to mute my phone while in a call so that nobody can hear me. My power button is set to hang up the call, so I can't push it. Is there another way to mute my microphone?

While you're on a phone call, you can adjust the volume of the call with the volume buttons, or you can hang up the call by pressing the power button. However, if you want to mute your microphone so the other party cannot hear what you say, you will not be able to use your hardware buttons. Instead, you will need to use the screen. While you're in a phone call, take the phone away from your face. You will then see a microphone with a slash through it. When you press this button, your call will mute, and your phone will then prevent your voice from being heard by the other person. To un-mute your phone, press the button again.

The problem can be caused by

  • your headphones connector. You will need to change the headphones to see if it is true.
  • the faulty S4 headphone socket. A Samsung service center might help with fixing that one.
  • a software update bug. Try to update your software or download and install a volume control application. For example, Smart Volume Control Lite or Volume Control +, to circumvent the bug until a software update has been released.
