Here is what I have in mind that you could try to be able to type messages again, so to be able to show again your alphabets instead of smileys can you first turn off your phone and restart it if it will be back to normal, if not open the create new message and look for the microphone symbol then simply tap and hold it for a few seconds then a pop-up should appear and you can see some options on how to change the keyboard or what kind of keyboard you want to use.

My phone won't let me type any letters?

When sending a text message there are only numbers and symbols.

When you only see numbers and symbols on your screen, you might have accidentally changed the input method and tapped the symbols. To return your keyboard to the alphabet, simply look below the set of numbers and symbols; beside the space bar and under the shift key you will find the SYM button. Simply tap it a few times until you get the alphabet.
