How do I bypass the pattern unlock/Gmail account identification on my phone?

I have an HTC EVO and initially thought I could just 'update' the password by clicking on 'forgot password' and having a new one created. However according to the forums this new one wouldn't be accepted and this has happened on my phone too. What a stupid system. Thanks Google.

If you have forgotten your phone's password, you will need to enter your Google account information when your phone asks for it. After you've entered the correct information, your phone will unlock to allow you to remove or change the password to something you can remember. If you don't remember your Google account information, go here to try to recover it. If you are unable to recover your Google account information, you will unfortunately need to perform a Factory Reset on your HTC EVO. This will wipe all of your HTC EVO data. To learn how to perform a Factory Reset on your Android phone, read through and follow the steps in this great VisiHow article. Once the reset is complete, be sure to write down the lockscreen password you choose so you can refer to it in the future if you forget your password again. In addition, be sure to log your HTC EVO into a Google account to which you know the password so you can enter that in the event that you forget your lockscreen password, as well.

First of all, check if "mobile data" (Internet) is connected but there is bad reception. Go out in the open or move to another area to see if mobile data works. Try asking someone to dial your number or use another phone to dial your number. If you can pull down the notification panel from the top while the call is coming through, then enable WiFi or "Mobile data".

If you cannot do that, then you will need to hard-reset your tablet as it is shown in our tutorial on hard-resetting Android devices. The usual procedure for Danny tablets (it may vary) is powering them down, pressing and holding volume-up and power buttons. When the Danny logotype appears, release only the power button. When you see "No command", release the power button. Now, press and release the volume-down. Then, do the same with the volume-up button. You will be able to access the recovery menu where you can select "wipe data/factory reset" with the volume (moving) and power (selecting) buttons.

You can perform a trick of using another phone to call the number of the locked smartphone up. Then, quickly pull down the notification bar and enable WiFi or mobile data. Some smartphones also allow to enable the Internet by pressing and holding the power button and tapping on "Data Network Mode". This will allow you to enter your Google credentials and unlock the smartphone. If that did not work, then your only option is hard-resetting the device as shown in this tutorial.
