How can I backup my phone without hitting the settings button?

I'm trying to backup my current phone because it shows a black screen but the phone is on, so I can transfer it to the new phone. How can I do that or what's the problem? Every time I try it fails on Kies to backup the data log, messages, apps, etc., except pictures, memos, and contacts.

Kies does not allow you to backup applications and application data -- those will be tied to your Google account and will automatically download when you sign into your account on your new phone. If you use Google Hangouts on your device, your text messages will be synced with your account, as well, and won't be backed up through Kies.

How do I restore my contacts after resetting my phone?

I had to reset my phone to factory settings, and when I opened up my contacts the only ones that were showing were my Gmail contacts. Weren't all of my contacts backed up? If so, where are they??

Google account only backs up Google (Gmail) contacts. The contacts that are on the SIM card or microSD card can be imported by launching Contacts from the home screen and pressing the menu button. Then, tapping "Import/Export" to reveal the options for importing. All of the rest of the contacts that were stored in the memory of the phone are expunged after a factory reset.

How do a non computer proficient dummy back up Galaxy S5 data?

I am not computer savvy. I have basic knowledge only. I am experiencing severe battery draining problems with my 9 month old Galaxy S5. Have replaced battery in May 15. I have been told that I need to do a Factory Reset on my phone but must backup all my contacts, data etc. I have a Gmail account - hardly used - but have never "knowingly" used cloud and have not used Kies on this phone since having trouble with Kies using my old Galaxy S2 in 2014.
