## Finding Weights and Measurements

The ancient Egyptians based their measurements on the proportions of the body. Our word 'mile' comes from the Roman mille which is meant '1000 paces'.

Most countries now use the metric system for measuring lengths, distances and so on. The metric system is a decimal system (based on the number 10)that was first used in France in the late 1700s.

Another system was used for a long time in Britain and the United States, that is known as the imperial system. That system is still in place today in many areas.
