HTC m9 factory reset not working as I can't sign in?

Have done a factory reset and Google now wants a previously synced account to give access to phone. I have used the account I set phone up with but it keeps asking for a previous owners account. I have owned phone since new and only did a factory reset because Google.gapp keeps crashing. Have even used find previous account and Google sends the code to the phone but then comes back with please enter previous user account. Isn't that just great
