Galaxy S4 running hot and battery is discharging very rapidly?

Even though I have cleared every app I still have the phone heat up at or near the top of the phone. The battery is draining very quickly. I have uninstalled several apps that were running but no change. Is there a way to find out what could be running in the background other then holding the center button for several seconds and then deleting all the apps showing.. Karl. My situation is not covered in the article. It must be an application that is running in the background but not showing up front. I have tried: Exchanged batteries. Uninstalled apps that I thought could be running in the background, like Google calendar that could be looking for syncing. I think it was caused by: I have no idea otherwise I would not be stumped by it.
