Download Torrents on an Android Device

Edited by Jay

Torrents are a great way to download various forms of digital files over the Internet. A torrent file itself doesn't contain any of the actual content such as programs, images, ISOs, media files, etc. Instead, a torrent includes the metadata about the particular files or folders being shared. Torrents typically have the file extension .torrent, and require a BitTorrent application or client (uTorrent, qBittorent, Transmission, etc.) to run.

BitTorrent is a transfer protocol for peer-to-peer (P2P) sharing. When a user downloads digital files and is connected to a P2P network, they're downloading bits and pieces from various people who are all sharing the same file or files. This is why download speeds tend to be much quicker when more users are seeding a torrent.

Although people typically use desktop or laptop computers to download and share digital files via BitTorrent, the option to use a mobile device is also a viable, and sometimes more convenient method. Everything functions the same as it would on a computer, except the BitTorrent client is in the form of an app. Users still need to have a good WiFi or Data connection, and enough available space on their device to store whatever they plan to download. It's also a good idea to use a VPN when running torrent files because of many ISP's tend to throttle or restrict P2P traffic.

**PLEASE NOTE** P2P traffic, or downloading digital content via torrent files isn't illegal, however, downloading copyrighted material via torrents is. There are several instances when running torrent files is perfectly legal; downloading ISOs or OS distributions, free software, public domain content, etc.
