How to Turn Off TalkBack Mode on the Samsung Galaxy S5

TalkBack is a great feature, unless you accidentally enabled it. Then it's just frustrating.

Most people who explore their phone and test out new features can probably share a story or two about the time they accidentally turned on something they were later unable to turn off. The TalkBack feature on a Samsung Galaxy S5 is perhaps more difficult to turn off than anything else, because it makes your phone unusable when attempting normal access methods. Fortunately, it's not that hard to turn off. Just follow the steps in this guide, and your phone will be back to normal in no time.

Tips and Suggestions for Disabling TalkBack on the S5

TalkBack will drive you crazy if you don't know about these tips.

When you turn on TalkBack mode, your phone assumes that you are a user needing visual assistance. This causes the way your phone accepts touch input to change. That means your normal touch gestures won't work anymore. You'll need to follow these tips to interact with your phone.

Was this helpful? Yes | No | I need help

  • Single tap will cause TalkBack to read out the menu item, function, or option you've tapped on.
  • Single tap or single press options become double tap or double press if you want to activate something.
  • Slide or scrolling functions require two fingers, instead of one finger.
  • Password options, such as entering a PIN, require a tap and a long press on the second tap. This must be done for each number or letter in a password or PIN.
  • Sliding for a pattern unlock also requires a single press, and then a long press, without lifting your finger after the long press. Then you can slide to pattern unlock.
  • Disabling complex passwords is strongly recommended before turning on TalkBack, as it can be quite frustrating to perform certain security unlocks when in TalkBack mode.

Questions and Answers

S5, could not find the TalkBack to turn OFF?

S5, could not find the TalkBack to turn OFF. I tried the instructions. I could not navigate my phone

To navigate and scroll through the menus with the TalkBack feature enabled, always double-tap and scroll up or down with two fingers. Tap, hold, and drag the screen with two fingers apart. You need to tap once to select and double-tap to open options. In the worst-case scenario, when the TalkBack mode gets stuck no matter what you do, you might have installed applications that use accessibility options (usually those applications, like Addons Detector, use push-advertisement blocking) in a botched up way that might interfere with the TalkBack gestures. You will need to find and remove the applications first.

The recipient of my calls hears no echo, but I hear my own echo. How do I fix that?

I've tried resetting and pulling out the battery.

There can be two answers to that problem if it is not created by your own device. The first one is that the recipient has enabled the loudspeaker, and the sound from the loudspeaker is sent back to you, creating the echo. The second answer is that there is a delay within the carrier. All of the phones send our own voice back into the speaker at a small delay (around 10 milliseconds), and we perceive it as if we are on air. This feedback is called sidetone, and it can be delayed by rerouting your call through many repeaters or base towers, for instance, making the delay larger and befuddling you. The easiest method of solving this is hanging up and calling again: the phone will activate its echo cancellation or the connection will be rerouted. You can also move closer to the conversation partner or use another carrier, which are less feasible solutions. You can also use another phone to see if it fixes the problem: if it does, report with the problem to the nearest service center and tell them that the echo cancellation creates an audible sidetone that prevents you from having a conversation.
