Disable Talk Back Mode in Samsung Galaxy Tab

Edited by Graciela Franchesca Rosario, Lynn, Eng, Melsan and 17 others

Android phones with Android version 4.0 and higher (Ice Cream Sandwich), like Galaxy Note II, Galaxy S II, Galaxy S III, Nexus device, HTC handset or Motorola -- have the TalkBack feature on their device accessibility settings. This feature is found in devices having Jelly Bean and ICS. This feature can be helpful for persons with sight impaired, a voice reading aloud anything you do on your phone, like read the number buttons, time, name of the app icons, etc. Activating TalkBack mode blocks few other features in the phone though, like you cannot open the notification center, or take screenshots.

Device still speaks even if TalkBack is deactivated

In this case, Driving mode must be turned on. This mode allows you to safely use your tablet while you drive, as the phone will speak out loud the information associated with any notifications that you receive while you're driving. To turn driving mode off, swipe down from the top of your phone with two fingers to bring down your notification panel, and turn Driving mode (also known as Hands free mode) Off.

Questions and Answers

This is the Tab 3, not the phone. On the accessibility / TalkBack line, there is no "off" button, no "deactivate" button. Incomprehensible, but true, I have NO idea what caused this curse to turn on in the first place.

When you go to Accessibility, there is no option there that you can turn off the TalkBack mode of the phone. When you go to Accessibility option on the phone, you need to tap the TalkBack first and there you will find there the button that you need to select to turn off this option, it is located on top of the phone screen when you go to that settings. Normally, the TalkBack switch does not say as turn off but it just have an green icon if its enabled. It doesn't matter if you have the Samsung Galaxy Tab and not the Samsung Galaxy phones, they have the same OS basic features to where you can find and enable and disable.

Another way to disable TalkBack is by going to all the applications running on your device. Just go to the Settings then Manage Applications or Applications manage and look for the TalkBack, simply tap it and hit on force to stop to set the settings back to original in the TalkBack only. You can find these steps in the above article for alternative.

If worst things happened that you still cannot find that off button and wanted to disabled, there is another way. The alternate way is to set the phone back to factory settings, this means that you are going to wipe the phone's content to zero. Before you do a reset to factory, you need to do a back-up first to your computer to have the contents back up and restore it later on your Tablet using your Samsung Keys. Doing a reset on your phone will set everything to its default condition to all of the settings you made before.

More or less, you enable the TalkBack on your Tablet that you did not notice it or maybe when you are checking or exploring the settings of the device. One possible reason also is if someone used your Tablet and play with the settings and did not inform you that he/she enabled some settings where he/she find him/her self do not know how to disabled it. Try to recall who was the last 3 person used your Tablet as you prime suspect, could be your children, husband, boyfriend, girlfriend or even friends. Such settings will not enable itself, unless, some enabled it on your Tablet.

Talk without collecting information?

Hi! I would like to ask how to avoid that when you activate TalkBack, it's policy & agreement says that the application will collect data from your phone. If you read it in full, then it shows even accounts and sends them out. Can I make it work and keep my privacy at the same time? Thanks!

Was this helpful? Yes | No| I need help

You will have to permit the application to get all of the demanded access to your device by agreeing. Fortunately, we have not found any potential leaks of privacy.

The application asks for permission to

  • receive notifications when you are interacting with the application, which will keep your privacy;
  • inspect window content you are interacting with, which is done locally too;
  • speak out loud the touched items, which keeps your privacy;
  • install scripts to ease the usage of the application, which does not send any data;
  • "observe" text as you type it, including credit card data, which is done locally, and it is not sent anywhere.

When you install the software, you will be warned that it will

  • read phone status and identity;
  • modify or delete the contents of your USB storage;
  • read the contents of your USB storage;
  • modify or delete the contents of your USB storage;
  • read the contents of your USB storage;
  • read phone status and identity;
  • send package removed broadcast;
  • control vibration;
  • run at startup;
  • prevent device from sleeping;
  • view network connections;
  • draw over other applications;
  • change your audio settings;
  • have full network access.

"Send package removed broadcast" means that TalkBack will show a notification that an application package has been removed. All other permissions are local.

How do you open the Samsung Galaxy Tab A when the text-to-speech option is activated? The tablet won't take my password because the letters are not being entered as I input them.

My Galaxy Tab shows "Enter password" while the text-to-speech option is enabled, but the keys won't allow me to enter my password correctly.

First, tap on the required key that you want to enter. Then, double-tap the key to enter it. Basically, it is triple-tapping each single letter.
