You're watching VisiHow. In this tutorial, we are going to show you how to create a new document in Adobe InDesign CS6 in Windows 7.
To begin, you should open Adobe InDesign.
You can do that by clicking the Windows icon in the bottom-left corner. This will bring up a list of your recently used programs.
Click "Adobe InDesign" if it's on the list.
InDesign has a pink-and-purple icon with the letters "ID" on it.
Alternatively, click the search bar at the bottom of the screen.
Then, type "Adobe InDesign".
Click "Adobe InDesign CS6" to open it.
You'll be taken to your workspace. This dialogue box will appear every time you open InDesign. You can create a new document by using the dialogue box.
You can click "Document" under "Create New".
You can close the dialogue box.
Click "File" in the top-left corner.
Move the cursor to "New" and click "Document...".
You can also do this with the shortcut "Ctrl" + "N". This will create a new document. We will see a window where we can specify what our document should be. InDesign, unlike Photoshop and Illustrator, is used to create publications mostly.
First, click the "Intent" drop-box.
This is where you want your document to end up.
You can click "Print".
This is for documents for printing. Let's select "Print".
You can also click "Web" and "Digital Publishing".
Those are more for screens, not just online.
You can click "Number of Pages".
Enter the number of pages.
Click "Start Page #".
This is the number of the page on which to start. You can create documents with many pages if you want to create a book, which you can later assemble with the "Book" option in InDesign.
You can check or uncheck "Facing Pages".
You can click any paper size.
The "Letter" format is commonly used in the U.S.
You can also click "Custom..." to customize the paper size.
In this tutorial, "A3" is clicked.
You can modify "Width" and "Height".
You can do that by clicking the up and down arrows or you can highlight the value and type a new one. The "Page Size" will change to "Custom...". InDesign works in picas. If you're not familiar with the picas, then you can type your measurement unit. InDesign will automatically convert it to picas when you click away from the input boxes.
You can click one of the two "Orientation" icons.
Those are portrait and landscape icons.
Then, you can modify the "Number" value.
You can adjust this to set the number of columns. You can do it either by clicking the arrows on the left side or by typing a number. You can use it for a table in a magazine. The text will be in the column form instead of the paragraph form then.
You can modify the "Gutter" value in the same way as well.
Then, you can set the margins in the same way.
Let's click "Intent" again.
These documents are for online, tablet, and smartphone viewing.
You can choose your "Number of Pages" and "Start Page #" again.
Click "Page Size".
You will see unusual pixel dimensions. You can choose the dimensions for computer, tablet, or phone devices if you want.
Let's click classic "1024 x 768".
You can customize the dimensions in the "Width" and "Height" fields.
Let's click "Intent" again.
Click "Digital Publishing".
Click "Page Size".
You will be able to specifically choose "iPhone", "iPad", "Kindle Fire/Nook", and "Android 10"".
Let's click "iPad".
The dimensions of the iPad screen will be reflected in the "Width" and "Height" fields.
Let's click "Page Size" again.
Let's click "iPhone".
The dimensions will change to smaller values. These settings work similarly to "Web".
To create a book, do not select "Book" from the dialogue box.
Instead, click "Intent" and click "Print".
Then, choose the "Number of Pages" value.
If you click "Book" in the "File" menu, then a book will be created from a previously created InDesign document, which is what we are creating right now. Therefore, you can assemble a book; but you cannot create a book straight away. Click "New" and "Document..." in the "File" menu instead (unless you have preexisting documents).
You can click "Save Preset..." before pressing "OK".
This way, you will save the settings for the next time you create a document in InDesign.
Click "OK" to create your document.
