Create, Add, or Remove a Google Account on an Android Device

As an Android user, you need a working Google account to do pretty much anything. In fact, all Google's services (the Play Store, Gmail, etc. )require an active account. There are times when you may wish to create a new account, perhaps for work, school, or to use with specific services only. Whatever the reason, being able to create a new Google account quickly can prove handy in numerous instances.

In addition to creating a new Google account, there may come times when you want to add or remove an existing account from your Android-powered device. The good news is, Android makes adding and removing accounts pretty painless.

In the following VisiHow tutorial, we're going to walk through the steps for creating, adding, and removing a Google account with an Android device. For this guide, we used a Google Pixel running Android 8.1.0.

Create a New Google Account on Android

    On the home screen, swipe up to access your app tray.

    Once inside the app tray, tap the "Settings" icon.

    On the Settings screen, tap "Users & accounts".

    From the Users & accounts screen, tap "+ Add account".

    On the Add an account screen, tap "Google".

    When the Google Sign in screen appears, tap "Create account".

    On the Create a Google Account screen, enter a first and last name, then tap "NEXT".

    On the Basic information screen, enter your date of birth

    For the Gender field, tap the drop-down arrow for more options. For Gender, you can select; Male, Female, Rather not say, or Custom.

    When all your basic information is entered, tap "NEXT".

    Here on the How you'll sign in screen, enter your preferred email address

    If the email you've entered is already taken, you'll see a message that says; "Username is taken". You can choose one of the suggested usernames, or keep trying until you find an available one. Once you're satisfied with the email/username, tap "NEXT".

    Next, enter a strong password for your new Google account

    Try to mix in numbers, uppercase letters, and special characters if possible. Once you've entered a strong password, tap "NEXT" to continue.

    Here on the Add your phone number screen, you have the option to link a mobile number to your new Google account

    Tap either "YES, I'm IN" or "MORE OPTIONS". For our example; we selected "MORE OPTIONS", which still allows you to add your number.

    Here on the Choose what's right for you screen, you can select; No, don't add my phone number, Yes, I'm in, or Add my number for account security only

    Once you've made your selection, tap "DONE". It is advised to add a number at least for security, as this is the quickest way to recover your account if you forget the password.

    If you opted to add your number, enter it on the following screen, then tap "NEXT"

    You'll receive an SMS message with a verification code (charges may apply).

    If the phone number you entered in the previous step has been used before, you'll see the following screen

    If it's the first time, you're using your number to create a Google account, enter the code sent to you via SMS. In our example, we selected "Continue creating a new account".

    Finally, we get to the Privacy and Terms screen

    Review the terms, then tap "I AGREE" to create your new Google account.

    Now that your new account is created, tap "NEXT" on the Thank you screen.

Add existing Google Account to an Android Device

    From the home screen, swipe up to access your app drawer.

    Next, enter the email address for the Google account you wish to add to your device, then tap "NEXT".

    With your username/email entered, type the password associated with the account, then tap "NEXT".

    Next is the Terms of Service Policy screen, to read it in full, tap the link

    Once you're ready, tap "I AGREE" to add the Google account to your Android-powered device.

    Now, when you visit Settings > Users & account, you'll see the Google account you just added listed.

Remove a Google Account from an Android Device

    While on the home screen, swipe up to get into your app drawer.
