Choosing the pictures for your VisiHow.com articles is a choice that you should make with the utmost care. Using a photograph that does not belong to us and which we do not legally have the right to use can result in problems for the site.

Very often what happens is that legal owner of the picture sends a notice to Google. Google then sends a takedown notice to the site in question. The more takedown notices that a site receives for copyright violations, the lower that site will rank in the search engine. [1]

That means that it is more important than ever to be sure that you choose the pictures that you are going to use very carefully. Images which we do not allow are images which are watermarked, are copyrighted, or are showing private body areas.

Most of us are aware of those restrictions, but what we are not sure of is how to know which images are okay to be used. When you are looking for an image, the best kind of image to use is an original one. If you have a photo that you have taken yourself, that's going to be the best option. Every image has a license.

Some licenses require a caption credit, as you see in the picture above. Some require only a credit on the site and some require other things to use them. When you get an image, make sure that you know how to correctly attribute it for the site.

Some of them are public domain, some are creative commons attribution and others are simple attribution use. If you do not know what kind of a license the image has, then find out, or the best bet is not to use it. The best way to look for an image is usually not to use Google image search. Just because the image is there, does not mean you are allowed to use it.
