Edited by Vanessa Alexandra Avisado, Eng, Anonymous, Lynn and 8 others

Each person has unique physical attributes. You can enhance your individual features if you know how to choose clothes to match your eyes, skin tone, and hair color. Buying a new dress may be an ordinary and simple task to accomplish. However, you may become frustrated when you stand in front of the mirror to see that the dress which looks stunning in the store window doesn't look good on you at all. What does it take to find the right clothes that can make you look your best?

Like everyone else, you have certain clothes that you like to wear more often than the others. When you look in your closet, you may see the same color palette. Although you vow to add more interesting colors, you continue to be magnetized by the same colors. Interestingly, the reason for that is because some colors simply look better on your skin tone, in pretty much the same manner that they also complement your eyes and hair color. So if you're going to spend on clothes, you have to be sure you're buying the right color of clothes that match your eyes, skin tone, and hair color.

Know Your Personal Color

People's skin comes in many different shades, but there are only two undertones:

S24SA003 - 2.jpg

Warm and cool. The undertones are what count in determining the right colors to suit you. To determine yours, turn your hand over with the palm up. If the veins are blue or purple, you have a cool tone. If they appear green or have a yellow cast, then you have a warm tone. Knowing what color tone is right to go with your skin and hair can dramatically change your entire appearance. The right color can give you a flattering and healthy glow, while you can end up looking older when you choose the wrong color.

How to Identify the Right Color for your Personal Profile

Is your color profile warm or cool?

Normally, the color red is used as the basis in identifying your color. Trying on some red suits can help you identify your color profile and find the right color for you.

  1. 1
    Warm Based Reds:
    S24SA003 - 3.jpg
These include scarlet and orange red that have traces of yellow. You have a warm color profile if you look good wearing clothes with warm based reds. You'll never go wrong when you buy clothes in the color of orange, watermelon, coral, yellow, dark leafy green, and peacock blue. Fill your wardrobe with taupe, yellow and rose-gold, but never include cool blues in your selection.

  2. 2
    Cool Based Reds:
    S24SA003 - 4.jpg
An easy way to determine if you have a cool color profile is to see if you look good in cool based reds, such as fuchsia, cherry, and raspberry. Cool based reds contain bluish tint like the colors found in peppermint, baby pink, cherry reds, evergreen, fuchsia violet, and powder blue. It's not surprising that cool toned people look their best when wearing clothes in cool colors like royal or navy blue, gray, and black. If you are shopping for clothes, think of colors that remind you of water and the sky, but avoid clothes with yellow hues. In terms of metallic, silver is your thing.

Understand the Color Wheel

Did it amaze you to see someone wearing two opposite colors that looked good when combined together? Chances are, the wearer knows her undertone and she can play with the color wheel adeptly. It pays to know how the color wheel works.

Was this helpful? Yes | No | I need help

The color wheel is a round illustrative organization of color hues showing the relationship between primary, secondary, and complementary colors. There's an invisible line that splits the wheel in half to indicate the warm and cool sides.

  1. 1
    Complementary Colors:
    S24SA003 - 5.jpg
If you pick any color and trace your finger to its direct opposite, you will get two complementary colors, a warm and a cool color. If the colors complement on the wheel, they are most likely to look great in your choice of clothes. Refer to the color wheel to determine the most flattering look for you by placing the color that works best for your skin tone near your face. It will set the color combination to help you choose the right accessories to harmonize your entire look.

    Analogous Colors:
    S24SA003 - 6.jpg
They are friendly colors found directly to the left and to the right of the original color you picked. Analogous colors can do wonders to your wardrobe because they are complementing each other.

    Sort the Wardrobe Colors.
    S24SA003 - 7.jpg
Group your clothes together according to the same colors. Stash them in piles of black, red, yellow, blue, and others. (7)

  2. 2
Assess which Colors Match your Physical Attributes.
    S24SA003 - 8.jpg
Stand before a good-sized mirror as you drape each piece of clothing around your body. It is best to perform the assessment with someone who can give you an honest opinion. The process will help you pick the best colors that flatter and make you look healthy, and identify the non-complimenting colors that make you look aged and tired. The color category will help you build a wardrobe consisting of clothes that look best on you.

  3. 3
    Mix and Match Clothing Items.
    S24SA003 - 9.jpg
Take a piece from each color group and add another piece from one of the piles. Match them against your skin to determine if the combination suits you differently.

Tips, Tricks and Warnings

  • Color tends to be at play when it's nearest the face. If you love a particular color that doesn't suit your hair style or eye color, try wearing it away from these parts, like using a handbag or pair of shoes.
  • You may have a favorite dress that doesn't make you look better. Combine it with your winning color and see the great difference it makes in enhancing your appearance.
  • Always project confidence in whatever piece of clothing you wear. It is still the best look anyone can have, regardless of outfit.

Questions and Answers

Trying to decide what color to wear for school pictures?

I naturally have bright blonde hair and blue eyes, I also have a white skin tone. I was thinking a navy blue shirt I have?

Whether the school photographer is planning to come in spring, summer, fall, or winter, you can make sure what your wearing will have you looking your best.

A great way to do this is by wearing layers on the day that the school photographer is scheduled to come and take photos. This way you can change your appearance to suit the backdrop they are using. In this case, whether it is a blue backdrop or a more orange backdrop, you'll be prepared. This is especially true in your case, because if the photographer uses a blue backdrop, you will probably not want to be in a navy sweater, but instead prefer something green, or another color that suits blondes well.

Another good reason to wear layers is that you won't mess up your hair when making changes to your outfit. You can easily put on something extra, or take it off, allowing you to bring one or two extra sweaters. This way you'll be sure to look your best in school pictures.

I have warm undertone and yellow white skin.

Rich jewel tone colors like garnet red or royal blue will be the best for you. For neutrals choose grey and off white instead of beige or white which will wash your coloring out.

What clothes color should I wear if I am an Asian brown?

I am brown Asian, petite, 75 kilos and 5 inches height. What should be the color of my tops and pants? Thank you very much.

Choose vibrant colors for tops and avoid pastels. Pants can be almost any color but because you are petite but avoid light grey.

Can you give me pictures to show what cool and warm look like in real life, to me it's the same. In ivory skin color as I'm light brown..

Look at your veins on the inside of your wrist. If they are blue then your undertone is warm but if they are green then your undertone is cool.

I'm light skin trying to find which colors best suit my skin tone?

I'm trying to find the colors that best suit my skin tone. I'm light skin person and I have been having problems in matching the colors of my clothes, texture, etc...and I'm planning to change that concept to be a more confidence when I match my outfit when going out to work or just daily wardrobe. Thanks. I have tried: I usually wear my outfit based on my mood daily. When I'm not feeling well, I usually wear skirts and blouse... and when I'm in the a good mood, I wear pants, slacks and good tops. I have no clue on what colors to match so I usually just see the outfits and pull them, wear and good to go.. I think it was caused by: To be honest, I have been a simple person ever since I was young. I didn't really like fashion and bling bling... it kinda of make me sick. I don't wear makeup, jewelries, etc and have been in the motto of "Simple thinking simple living". I think this is really the cause of my problem. I only want to upgrade a little due to the fact that my work requires me to dress properly, and especially when I go to official trips that I have to adhere to the attire either it's suit/tie or casual wear.

A deep dark purple or plum looks professional and compliments a light skin tone. Instead of stark black, choose navy blue or grey for suits. Skirts and pants can be black though, but it you wear a black dress be sure to accent it with a vibrant scarf so that you can have the appearance of color.

Was just curious as to what color would best match my skin tone. Never really paid much attention to fashion and I am making a conscious effort to do better. I have a brown skin, black hair, dark brown eyes

Green veins on my inner wrist.

You have cool undertones so pastels like lilac and robin's egg blue are radiant on you as well as reds with pink undertones and bright whites.

Blonde hair guys look great in blues and pastel colors. Blonde is almost neutral but avoid olive and golden colors.

How do I find someone locally with the skills/insights that you've expressed in this article?

I'm moving to a small, U.S. island to help develop their economy. But I can't develop an economy and not help develop the people. I noticed that little is invested in the women, young and not so young, in knowing themselves and making the best of who they are. My wife and I were gifted with an appointment with a "colorist" (my word) who used our skin, eye, and hair color to link us to "seasons" winter, spring, summer, and fall) and made recommendations for clothing and accessories accordingly. We have a larger island close by - Guam. I'd like to think that amongst the locals and the large military contingency and families that there are people with this skill that I can bring to our island to help our gals. How do I find them?

Greetings, Can one's underlying skin tone palette be necessary to alter when the overlying skin tone changes to reds, yellows and grays with one's health changes? And can those changes be seen in one's eye shades inside of the regular eye color?

The dosha in Ayurveda explained to me the underlying and overlying color tones, but the palette is what we are working with.. If someone's health changed and all of a sudden they found themselves not able to wear the same color tones due to alterations inside of these palettes, we will be wrong inside of our color assessments.. I have tried: There is a palette for the basic growing period skin tone, and another palette with an overlying skin tone, but when we assess people's needs on their personal color wheel it has to combine both.. I think it was caused by: People's health concerns can alter both the overlying and underlying skin tones according to scientific findings.

My hair is blond on top, and level 6 on bottom, I have pink in my face, but I am very tan and my cheeks and tip of nose stay reddish. I would like to change to top of my hair to one of those 'crazy temporary' colors like blue, red, green, aqua or something temporary. I have blue eyes and I don't know that will look good. Can you help me decide on a color or should I not do it at all and just make the blond more platinum blonde. I am about, completely gray in the front and side of my head, and a few grays in the back can you help?
