Can I use the SIM card from my HTC in my new Samsung Galaxy S5?

I've tried using it, and I get a No SIM card error no matter what I do... very frustrated! Really??? I'm looking for a straight forward Yes you can or No you can't.. can't seem to find a straight answer, just saying.

No, the message you are getting is because your new Samsung Galaxy S5 is locked to a different network than the SIM card is. You need to unlock your phone first to be able to use the old SIM card.
