Can I backup my Galaxy S5 on my computer?

I plugged my Galaxy S5 into my computer because I thought the quick run would kick in and prompt me to download some program to manage my phone with, but it didn't, and I can't find it on the Samsung site. What do I do?

Unfortunately, your computer will not prompt you to download an application when you plug in your Samsung Galaxy S5. Android devices require that your computer downloads and installs special drivers so it can recognize the device and allow you to transfer your files. Thankfully, there is a program that does this for you and allows you to easily transfer and manage your Samsung Galaxy S5's files on your computer. It's called Samsung Kies 3. The reason you couldn't easily find it on Samsung's website is because it really is rather difficult to find. Instead of searching for it yourself, click this link to download and install Samsung Kies 3. Note: do not install the original Samsung Kies; your device is only compatible with Samsung Kies 3. Once the application has downloaded and installed, follow the short, simple guide below to transfer your files and backup your Galaxy S5 on your computer:

  • Turn your Galaxy S5 on.
  • Plug it into your computer.
  • Wait for Kies 3 to open.
  • Follow the onscreen instructions to set up Kies 3.

You will now be able to transfer files from your Samsung Galaxy S5 to your computer through Samsung Kies 3. To create a backup of your Samsung Galaxy S5, follow these simple steps:

  • Plug your device into your computer and wait for Kies to open.
  • Click the Backup/Restore tab.
  • Click Data backup.
  • On this screen, mark the checkbox for each type of file/content you want to backup.
  • Click Backup, located in the upper right-hand corner of the screen.
  • Once the backup has finished, a window will appear saying that your data has been successfully backed up. Click Complete to finish the process.

Your Samsung Galaxy S5's data will now be backed up on your computer.
