Bought rehab ASUS laptop 6 months ago. Will not power up. Is this the motherboard?

The person I bought the laptop from has a computer shop in Gulfport Florida. I took it to him to look over. The power light came on when plugged in. He claims that since I have been using hibernating mode, I killed the motherboard. Now I have the computer back, but no lights come on at all since he looked it over. I don't trust this business owner now and I believe he sold me a bad computer which took 6 months to die, upon very little use. He will not reimburse me more than .00 and states that he used a multi-meter to test the power button which drops to 0 connection. I think he ripped me off totally and I have no recourse for my 7.00 computer that lasted 6 months. Can you give me your thoughts?
