Becoming an eBay trading assistant can be a money-making career for you. It can be much more efficient for you than if you are storing and selling your own items. However, it does require some research, experience, and savvy in order for you to earn a living. Most people with items posted for sale in eBay are lacking the time and skill to sell their belongings, so that opens the door for you to sell for them. If you can become a registered eBay trading assistant it will be advantageous because you will be able to advertise in eBay, and can earn income even faster. Follow along to discover how you can become a successful trading assistant at eBay.

  1. 1
Listen to the voice of experience.

    1. You can sell items for people on eBay without being on the eBay directory. However, it is a good practice to have every client sign a contract for protection to both of you. Multiple copies should be initialed. Make a copy of it and store it on your computer. With a contract you will also be more professional.
    2. Selling on eBay at first will be a learning experience of "hits and misses".
    3. You may at first lose income due to selling an item at too low of a price. So, keep your first consignments of lower value items.
      1. It is recommended to begin your business selling items of value under $100 while you hone your skill. After five to ten sales, you will perhaps be ready to assist customers in selling items of high value, such as fine jewelry, art, or vehicles. Do your research for each type of merchandise.
    4. An "underhanded" buyer may take advantage of your lack of experience and pay you much less than the appropriate price at auction.
    5. Peruse items' prices posted and prices sold thoroughly. This will be a guide for your sale of items for others. Learn the typical value of a wide variety of items for selling and trading. You want to build a reputation as a worthy eBay trading assistant for others.
    6. Once you have experience and trust gained from clients, you will be offered more items to sell by them and their referrals.
    7. Some items may turn out to be highly valuable, which translates to high commission for you.

    There is no charge.

    1. Once you are on the directory, you can let potential clients know that you are available to help them sell their merchandise.
    2. Requirements to be registered on the eBay Trading Assistants Directory.
      1. You must have earned a customer feedback average score of at least a 50.
      2. You must have sold four or more items within the past month.
      3. You must have at least a 97 percent approval from all client feedback.
      4. You must have a good reputation with your eBay account.

Once on the directory, you can make your profile there.

    1. Click the link "Create/Edit Your Profile", located at the left navigation bar.
    2. On the profile you can post an identification photo.
    3. You can list all of your qualifications and background. There you can "sell yourself" by providing your hours of business, terms of sale, client fees, and how you can be contacted.
    4. Provide your location for those clients who reside in your vicinity and prefer a local trading assistant. You will need to provide a spot where they can drop off items.
    5. In time you may want to have multiple locations outside your home area for customers to drop off items. For these places you can create a profile for each to grow your customer base and profits.

Terms for Your Clients

  1. 1
Post all of your terms on your profile for clients.
Make sure that you go over them with prospective clients before transacting business with them. You should have your personal policies clear and established.
    1. Who is to set the starting bid price of their merchandise.
    2. Is there a minimum value that you accept, and are there only certain items that you will sell?
    3. Who will post the item as sold to a buyer?
    4. What are your fees, and what are the particulars? In other words, do you charge for picking up an item, and do the fees vary upon the type of merchandise? How is the money to be transacted?
    5. You and your client will benefit most if you can cover all terms and policies before you sell their items.

Know your state laws " There are several states in America that require you to have an auctioneering license before you can become a registered assistant.
There are courses and exams that must be passed before you can become licensed. There is also a fee that varies from state to state for the auctioneering license.

  6. 6
Charge your clients a simple flat fee percentage.
Some beginning eBay trading assistants charge a commission for the item without taking into account the eBay and PayPal fees. Soon they discover that they're either earning very little profit, or even losing income. Furthermore, calculating the eBay and PayPal fees for each item sold is time consuming.
    1. For smaller value items, it is recommended to charge 50 percent of the sale price for a fee.
    2. On high-dollar items, such as gold, fine jewelry, or vehicles, you can charge a lower percentage.
    3. As a guideline, you want to charge 50 percent for items up to $100 value. You may want to charge 30-40 percent on items over $100. For items over $750 you could charge around 25 percent. With this sliding scale on selling percentage fee, you can still earn a good income while being competitive.
    4. Have a verified shipping address. To protect the buyer, assistant, and seller, PayPal has an excellent Seller Protection Policy. The shipping address must be confirmed so that the buyer cannot claim the item was never received or misrepresented in some way.
    5. The PayPal Seller Protection Policy has very limited protection for shipping outside of the United States. It is recommended, therefore, to not internationally ship items sold on eBay.

Be sure to advertise your service.
Be resourceful and advertise in your local newspaper and online. Some classified advertisement websites, such as Craigslist, have free advertising. There are also classified newspapers in your area that will allow you to run ads at a reasonable fee, or even at no cost. You may also send out flyers and business cards, and post them on bulletin boards around town. Your family and friends can help you with this. You may wish to contact businesses in person for any items that you can sell on eBay for them. Try networking through social websites, also.

Questions and Answers

I am looking for a trading assistant?

I'm currently a seller on ebay & I'm looking for a trading assistant. I looked up your page as I would like to find out what the trading assistant can offer, so am I on the right spot?

From what I have found, ebay no longer supports the Trading Assistant service on their website. Ebay used to provide listings of TA in your area but they discontinued support for the TA service. The only way to find a trading assistant is if you could find someone who is already established with a good reputation. All the old URL for the TA web pages on ebay now link to this http://sellforme.ebay.com/home?_trksid=p2059161.l5350 Which is definitely worth checking into if you can't find any Trading Assistants in your area.
