Adjust Brightness and Contrast in Photoshop CS6

Steps

    To begin, we should have Photoshop open

    This can be seen at the bottom by the blue icon with the letters "PS".

    Once we have Photoshop opened, we should either create a new document or open an existing one

    There are other VisiHow videos on how to do that. In this example, we've already opened an existing document. Once we've done this, our screen will look similar to the one in the tutorial. We'll have a tab at the left-hand side. Any other documents will be listed along the top as well.

    We click "Image" in the top-left corner

    Move the mouse cursor to "Adjustments"

    This will open more options.

    We should click "Brightness/Contrast"
    .
    This is the most basic way to edit the contrast, and we will see multiple options to edit the brightness and contrast.

    We move the window to see the image better

    If we purely only need to adjust the contrast, then we click and drag the slider located under "Contrast"

    We can drag it left or right to adjust the contrast levels. As we can see the screen will get darker (less saturated) or lighter (more saturated) depending on in which direction we slide it. We will see that the "Contrast" number changes too.

    We can click on the number next to "Contrast" to type in a setting manually

    Let's type "4" or "-2". The image will be changed.

    We can also adjust the brightness in the "Brightness" section

    We can pull the slider to the right for a brighter image.

    We can pull the slider all the way to the left for the darkest option

    However, we are going to leave the "Brightness" slider in the middle

    We can see the "Brightness" value in the input box.

    We can click and type the value for "Brightness"

    We also have the option to select "Auto" contrast and brightness

    That will change both values depending on the image. "Brightness" and "Contrast" will be slightly adjusted to make the image a bit brighter and some contrast taken away to add definition to the image.

    If we want, we can click "Cancel"

    We will come back to the original image without any adjustments.
